The Vacancy
Structural Soils, part of the RSK Group, have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and ambitious Engineering Manager to join our expanding team in Glasgow, UK.
The Role:
As a Senior member of the team the Engineering Manager will fundamentally ensure the financial well-being of the company and that the health and safety procedures used by the company are appropriate to ensure the safety of all staff, subcontractors, visitors and members of the public who might interface with our works remain safe and are not harmed in any way by our activities.
The Engineering Manager must be able to assist in any aspect of the delivery of geotechnical projects and will therefore be able to demonstrate strong commercial and project management capabilities. The right candidate should be chartered geologist, civil engineer or environmental scientist, have at least 15 year's experience in the UK ground investigation industry with a good business development outlook and market sector awareness.
This is a Principal level Engineer role and would suit an ambitious candidate who is aiming for the next run of the corporate ladder.
More specifically the Engineering Manager will be responsible for:

  • Implement SSL's company business planning, strategy and action principles.
  • Review existing operations and find areas for development and growth.
  • Overseeing and controlling project budgets and invoicing.
  • Stewardship of health and safety in accordance with company standards and guidelines and assisting the Directors in improving and monitoring the Health and Safety wellbeing of the company.
  • Overseeing and controlling project budgets and invoicing.
  • Have an input into pay and promotions across the business.
  • Provide opportunities for staff training, development and advancement within the company.
  • Uphold company policies and procedures and lead by example.
  • Analyse market trends and forecast commercial performance, develop plans to achieve financial targets, monitor WIP and maximise invoicing.
  • Developing client relationships and building a client base with the support of the Business Directors and central marketing team.
  • Ensure strict compliance to recognised technical standards, guidance and legislation for tendering, delivery and completion of projects.
  • Provide leadership and support to SSL staff.
  • Price/review Major Project tenders.
  • Monitor company KPIs.
  • Disseminating knowledge and new information through regular briefings with the engineering teams and/or Team Leaders, involvement with the Company internal training scheme, development of training, guidance and procedural documents, emailed briefings.
The Engineering Manager will have direct responsibility for:
  • Overall management of SSL's Glasgow office.
  • Business development in Scotland.
  • Recruitment in our Glasgow office
  • Development of the factual reporting teams.
  • Co-ordinating a consistent adherence to SSL engineering procedures.
  • Contract sign off.
  • Project Manager for major contracts.
  • CAPEX applications.
Support:
The SSL management team are committed to making a success of all our operational teams throughout the UK. Mentoring and support will be provided by all the directors of the company and in particular by the Directors and the Commercial Manager.
Key Performance Indicators:
1). Sales - we would expect that after being in position for 6 months the sales should be on track to be at least 2.1M per annum. Billing must be carried out monthly and WIP reported accurately on all projects.
2). Profitability - we would expect this to average at least 15% across all contracts completed.
3). Marketing SSL services to potential clients is to be carried out at a rate of at least one per week, (assuming 50% of weekly working hours are with SSL). The details of these communications must be recorded and passed to the Business Development Manager. These are most likely to be in the form of tender follow up or tender support calls in the first instance.
4). Training - all Scottish engineers to be trained appropriately and according to the expectation of their grade (as per the SSL Engineering s and training matrix) and for this training to be maintained. Training records must be kept up to date.
5). Completion of projects - we would expect that all contracts are completed by the date as specified by the client in the contract.
6). Project reviews - 6 no. are to be completed every year.
7). Site Inspections - 6 no. are to be completed every year.
8). Manage the wellbeing of staff by listening to what they need to feel good in their workplace. 6 no. noteworthy CR SSL Glasgow team events should be reported per year.
