Trinity House maintains and operates around 450 buoys. We are looking for a proactive individual to join our Engineering and Operations team to become a competent electrical and electronics technician, able to build and maintain solar power units and lanterns, in a safe and efficient manner, to help keep our fleet of buoys in top condition.
You will study a Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance Technician apprenticeship course with Colchester Institute, while working alongside our Field Operations teams. Your first two years will be spent in our Harwich Buoy Yard assisting and supporting the Buoy Electrical Technician. Following this you will move to our Lighthouse Maintenance Engineering team where you will be putting your skills to use working and staying on our lighthouses situated in some of the most beautiful locations in the UK.
In the first year, you will attend Colchester Institute 2 days per week, moving to 1 days attendance per week from year 2. In the final 2 years your college work will be completed remotely with regular check ins with your Tutor. All travel to college will be paid for by Trinity House.
What you will do:-
Health and Safety. Maintain a safe working environment, ensuring all tasks are carried out to a high standard in accordance with Health and Safety guidance and Trinity House policies.
Buoy Yard Operations. Assist and support the buoy yard electrical technician in all aspects of buoy production and electrical maintenance around the depot, with a focus on the creation of solar packages and complex buoyage.
Plant Operation. Operate and maintain various items of plant from forklift trucks and Mobile Elevated Work Platforms to Overhead and Wheeled Cranes.
Lighthouse Operations. Carry out technical tasks to support the Field Operations team travelling to many seaside and offshore locations working on Navigation Aids and support systems at lighthouses, cottages and associated buildings and structures.
Report keeping. Keep up to date reports on work carried out, logging various details related to your daily tasks.
Travel around the U.K. You will have the opportunity to travel to various areas around the U.K. working both at other depots as well as on Lighthouses and beacons that are located all around the coast. During your placement with the Lighthouse Team there will be extended periods away from home, which will be compensated accordingly.
Gain Extensive training and Qualifications. As well as gaining a Level 3 Diploma in Mechatronics Maintenance you will also undertake a vast array of training to build your knowledge and skills. This will cover all aspects of the role ranging from plant and machinery operation and maintenance, general Buoy Yard tasks and record keeping, ensuring you are fully competent within your role.

What we are looking for:-
Skills and experience
A good basic understanding of I.T.
Good written English and Maths skills in order to be able to follow verbal and written instruction as well as to be able to record data.
Experience of following operating instructions and procedures.
The ability to manage your time and workload efficiently.
To be able to work as part of a team or on your own initiative as required.
Self motivation and reliability combined with a proactive and attentive mindset.
Five level 2 qualifications including English and Mathematics
A technical level 2 certificate or equivalent (e.g. City & Guilds) in an electrical or electronic engineering related discipline.
