In this role, you'll combine hands-on technical expertise with people leadership. You'll foster a culture where innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement thrive. By coaching and mentoring your team, you'll ensure they deliver high-quality, reliable software that meets customer needs and exceeds expectations. Most importantly, you'll create an environment where people feel valued, supported, and motivated to do their best work.




This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in our Newcastle office.




Your First 90 Days


- 30 days - Build strong relationships with your team and stakeholders, while gaining an understanding of current projects, delivery processes, and technical landscape.


- 60 days - Take the lead on planning and delivery. Embed agile practices, support estimation, and mentor team members to strengthen their skills and confidence.


- 90 days - Own team performance and capacity planning. Champion continuous improvement initiatives, align delivery with Sage's product roadmap, and set the tone for innovation and excellence.

You'll lead a talented, cross-functional engineering team, working alongside product managers, product owners, and other engineering leaders. Together, you'll deliver software that helps businesses run smarter and more efficiently. Key Responsibilities

Snapshot of Your Day-to-Day


You'll start your day aligning with your team, reviewing progress, unblocking challenges, and planning upcoming work. Throughout the week, you'll mentor engineers, facilitate planning sessions, and ensure agile delivery processes are running smoothly. You'll collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to set priorities, while keeping quality, reliability, and innovation at the heart of delivery. You'll also stay close to the technology in your area of expertise, setting technical standards and leading by example.




Qualifications


- Proven experience leading software engineering teams in an agile environment


- Strong technical expertise in at least one engineering discipline (backend, frontend, mobile, or DevOps)


- Track record of delivering maintainable, high-quality, and reliable software


- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills


- Experience coaching and mentoring to build high performing, engaged teams




Nice to Have


- Experience with resource and capacity planning


- Background in continuous delivery and large-scale SaaS platforms


- Familiarity with DevOps tools and practices


- Experience driving root cause analysis and continuous process improvement
