Job description 1


The Environmental Crime Officer (ECO) is an investigator in the Enforcement Team.
The purpose of the role is to support delivery of the following objectives in a dynamic and at times challenging environment. The role advertised will focus mainly as a disclosure officer on a major investigation.

  • Prepare our approach based on evidence using intelligence and information analysis.
  • Prevent and disrupt offending and criminal activity.
  • Protect the environment and legitimate business from harm.
  • Pursue those who offend deliberately or with reckless disregard.

Taking the lead on investigations into significant and serious offences, leading and co-ordinating the compilation of appropriate enforcement response, including presentation of case files.
Provides advice and guidance on new and existing enforcement policies, procedures and techniques.
Liaises with other organisations to detect, deter and deal with illegal activities that damage the environment.
Attends court, giving evidence on behalf of the Environment Agency to secure appropriate enforcement action.
Completes Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) applications for surveillance.
Fully Conversant with the Criminal Investigation Procedures Act 1996.

Provides a flexible resource across functions in accordance with national priorities, supporting major investigations.
All enforcement staff are expected to use continuous improvement methodology, tools and techniques to identify, implement and influence, whilst ensuring all activities are carried out in accordance with Environment Agency Health, Safety and Wellbeing policies

WMD Area Enforcement Team takes the enforcement lead in the investigation and enforcement of priority significant/serious offences.
We:
Act as a centre of excellence for enforcement, using the full range of sanctions to prevent, disrupt and investigate environmental crime.
Set an example to other areas of the business, developing Investigation Plans and managing the production of significant/serious offence case files.
Act as a lead for producing and serving enforcement notices associated with the above investigations
Experience/skills required 1


Experience in an investigatory or regulatory role, with significant experience in evidence collection/handling/application of enforcement sanctions. Good understanding of the relevant environmental legislation and thorough knowledge and experience working under the legislation which governs criminal investigations. A proven track record of achieving results, working alone or with others, showing self-reliance and good team player skills. Confident in dealing with hostile situations and an ability to proactively manage your own health and safety, and that of others. A methodical approach and an ability to interrogate databases and maintain excellent records is key. You will be expected to liaise with other teams and external partners to achieve our aims.
You will have a good working knowledge and experience of the Criminal Procedures Investigation ACT 1996
