Job summary
MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing, and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to the government, businesses and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe. A role in MI5 means you'll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.
Job description
Embark on an extraordinary journey with our Estates team as an electrical subject matter expert, where you'll lead on electrical policy, compliance and infrastructure across an estate environment like no other. This newly created position offers a rare chance to shape governance and create consistency in electrical policy and assurance across a truly unique and varied estate.
Working at various sites throughout the UK, you'll provide expert advice on electrical systems, ensuring best practices, legal compliance, and operational resilience to safeguard the infrastructure that underpins national security. Your efforts will help shape a consistent and robust approach to electrical safety and performance - supporting our mission-critical operations and ensuring our estate remains secure and efficient.
You could be advising project and maintenance teams on electrical infrastructure and legislation, or leading investigations into electrical incidents and faults. Alternatively, you might be managing critical infrastructure projects, including major shutdowns and resilience testing, or carrying out High Voltage Authorised Engineer responsibilities. We also have cross-functional workstreams where you'll collaborate with building managers, audit contractors and procedures, and provide technical assurance across a wide range of environments - from offices to workshops and data centres.
From policy development and compliance auditing to contractor oversight and project delivery, you'll play a central role in maintaining the integrity of our electrical systems. You'll manage an electrical compliance tracker, approve Electrical APs for both LV (low Voltage) and HV (High Voltage), and support snagging and sign-off processes for project work. Additionally, collaborating closely with our partners and external contractors to deliver cross-estate testing and ensure consistent standards across all sites is crucial.
Consistency and leadership in electrical policy and assurance across the estate are key. Confidence in navigating ambiguity, building relationships with existing teams, and influencing stakeholders to embed best practices will be vital.
Person specification
We're seeking an individual with significant experience in electrical systems and compliance, ideally gained in complex, high-security, or mission-critical environments such as government departments, defence, data centres, or facilities management. With extensive experience in a specialist electrical role, bringing a deep understanding of high and low voltage systems, and confidently managing the technical and operational demands of a varied estate.
We need someone who can demonstrate expertise in HV networks, generator systems (both rotary and static), and uninterruptible power supplies. As a High Voltage Authorised Engineer, experience in High Voltage (HV) switching and the creation of all associated safety documentation is crucial. Additionally, proficiency in reviewing complex electrical designs, managing fixed wire testing programmes, and ensuring safe systems of work across all sites is essential.
You should hold a recognised qualification such as an HNC in Electrical Services (or equivalent), alongside industry certifications including the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations and HV/LV Authorised Person training. Membership of a professional body such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) will further support your credibility as a subject matter expert. A full driving licence is essential, as you'll be required to travel across the estate and access plant rooms, equipment spaces, and confined areas.
We're particularly interested in individuals who are passionate about electrical systems and can apply creative problem-solving to deliver innovative, risk-based solutions. Being highly safety-conscious, observant, and calm under pressure is essential--able to reassure others, explain technical matters clearly, and plan effectively. Effective communication and auditing skills are key, as is the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels.
Your expertise will be essential to our mission, as will the ability to drive continuous improvement. You'll exemplify technical excellence, sharing knowledge, mentoring others, and helping to embed a culture of compliance, safety, and resilience across our estate.
