Are you an experienced mechanical engineering professional looking for a leadership role in a dynamic healthcare environment? Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly skilled Estates Officer (Mechanical) to join our Estates & Facilities team. This is a pivotal position ensuring our hospital buildings and engineering services are safe, compliant, and maintained to the highest standards.


You will manage a wide range of mechanical systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), steam boiler plants, and water treatment systems. Acting as an Authorised Person, you'll oversee statutory compliance, lead on critical projects, and support the delivery of a responsive, cost-effective estates service.


This role offers a Recruitment and Retention Payment of 2000 per year.




Main duties, tasks & skills required

Manage maintenance, installation, testing, and commissioning of mechanical plant and equipment. Act as the responsible person for service-critical systems such as steam boilers and HVAC. Ensure compliance with legislative standards and NHS technical guidance (HTMs). Lead and support capital projects related to mechanical services and infrastructure. Provide technical expertise and assurance in design and project meetings. Oversee risk assessments, safety audits, and governance for mechanical systems. Contribute to forward investment planning and sustainability initiatives.

Essential




ONC / HNC or equivalent in a mechanical engineering or similar discipline


HND or Degree level education and evidence of continuing professional development


Project Management Qualification (PRINCE 2) or similar

Membership of a relevant professional body

Extensive knowledge of Computer Aided Facilities Management Systems (CAFM). Managing and planning maintenance of Mechanical systems


Using BMS systems


Supervisory and Leadership experience

Desirable




Experience in writing and presenting both reports and business cases to be presented to a variety of forums.


Experience of managing, planning, and budgeting


Proven Management skills - as well as working directly with Senior Management / Executive level.


Perform root cause analysis on Serious Untoward Incidents for the Trust

Essential




Good knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite


Competency in Health and Safety Legislation.


Ability to interpret statistical data.


Able to prioritise work for self and others.


Ability to produce strategic plans based on national policy.


Advanced use of Microsoft Excel


Lead procurement exercises for new goods, equipment and services including directing the production of tender specifications Ability to interpret and apply National policies and guidelines.

Knowledge of Estates services provision.


Understanding of NHS and Trust Standing Financial Instructions.


Understanding of Policies on Recruitment and Retention of staff, Management of Sickness Absence, Industrial Relations, Risk Management and Procurement.


Able to engage, support, motivate and inspire large multi-faceted teams.
