People come to Northern for trains they can rely on - and that means keeping our standards high in everything we do. As our ETCS Standards Manager, you'd be at the heart of this, making sure our European Train Control System (ETCS) operations run safely, smoothly, and in step with major rail upgrades like the Transpennine Route Upgrade and West Coast Main Line enhancements.
Working closely with teams across operations, engineering, and safety, you'll be the go-to link between Northern and these big projects. The decisions you make and the standards you set will shape how we deliver safe, efficient, and future-ready train services across the North.
What you'll be doing
Leading the development, implementation, and review of operational and engineering ETCS safety standards, making sure they're applied consistently across Northern.
Acting as our lead for all ETCS standards matters, including creating new standards, writing briefings, designing assessment processes, and setting training syllabi.
Carrying out audits of ETCS safety standards, producing clear reports, and ensuring any issues are addressed.
Developing and delivering an engaging communication strategy for ETCS standards - whether that's through safety briefs, newsletters, videos, or other channels.
Supporting Northern's Operational Risk Management Strategy and promoting a proactive safety culture across all ETCS-related activities.
About you
We're looking for someone who can put the pro in programme leadership - someone with deep knowledge of ETCS, ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) or CCS (Control Command Signalling) systems, and a proven track record in rail operations.
Here are the essentials you'll bring:
NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent)
Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) practitioner
Business Change practitioner
Level 3 Competence Assessor and Company Instructor Course completion
Accredited safety auditor course
Thorough knowledge and experience in rail operations, rules, and regulations
Strong understanding of Northern's routes and the practical realities of running services
Strategic thinking, clear communication, and the ability to influence at all levels will be key to making an impact in this role.

We're more than just a train operator. We're the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we're on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.
Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we're celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.
At Northern, we don't just move people from A to B - we're building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that's something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we'll always offer an interview.
We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.
