Introduction

The invigilator is the person in the examination room responsible for conducting a particular examination session in the presence of the candidates. Invigilators have a key role in upholding the integrity of the external examination/assessment process.

The role involves:

ensuring all candidates have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their abilities ensuring the security of the examination before, during and after the examination preventing and reporting possible candidate malpractice preventing possible administrative failures
liaising with the Examination Officer and Senior Invigilator

Dear Invigilator Applicant,

Macclesfield Tutorial College is holding a free training session for invigilators this year. Attendance at the training session is not a guarantee of employment.

This will be held on

Tuesday 13th January 2026 10.00am

at our Cumberland Street office and if you are invited to take part you will be expected to attend for up to three hours.

DBS certificates are required for invigilators and if you have one which has been issued within the last three years we will need to see the original copy. If you do not have one which has been issued within the last three years you would require a new one.

If we appoint you and a new DBS certificate is needed you will be required to pay half the cost and we would subsidise the remainder of the fee.

Invigilation pays 14.00 or 15.00 per hour depending on whether the invigilation is taking place in Macclesfield or further afield respectively. A higher rate is available when carrying out additional exam-related responsibilities. In the case of work outside of Macclesfield the time spent travelling is also paid. Macclesfield invigilation sessions usually vary in length from 1.75 hours to 3.75 hours. Sessions outside of Macclesfield are typically much longer.

Examinations take place throughout the months of May/June, October/November and occasionally at other times in the year.
