CMVM, R(D)SVS, Exotic Animal Teaching Facility EATF

Fixed - 17.5hrs per week

Due to expansion within the current team The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies is very excited to advertise a part time Exotic Animal Teaching Technician post; 17.5 hours covering 3 days per week.

We are seeking a friendly, approachable and very reliable team member whose goal will be to provide a superb teaching experience for our students and the best care to our in-house teaching animals.

The jobholder should have previous experience within a veterinary environment or an exotic animal environment and must be able to demonstrate excellent handling and care abilities. This role includes the teaching of exotics species to groups of undergraduate students, therefore previous experience of teaching/demonstrating/training of students or members of the public is vital. They must be flexible and available to cover weekend work and public holidays/holiday cover if required.

This role will be based within our Exotic Animal Teaching Facility (EATF) on Easter Bush campus in Midlothian. The EATF houses a variety of small mammals, reptiles and birds. Our undergraduate students thoroughly enjoy working with the teaching technicians to learn about the husbandry, handling and proper care of these species. R(D)SVS is one of the only Veterinary Schools in the UK to have an exotics facility of this size on site, we are extremely proud of this.

Animal care and husbandry is a large part of the role, however the jobholder will also be assisting with the preparation and delivery of all teaching classes within the unit alongside another teaching technician and the EATF manager.

The successful candidate will join the wider clinical skills teaching team so therefore a small part of the role will include assisting in other varied veterinary teaching classes under supervision of the teaching team. Some classes require cadaver material so candidates must be happy to deal with these if and when required.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • In depth of knowledge and understanding of caring for exotic pet species
  • Hands on experience of working within a veterinary or animal teaching environment (preferably with an exotics caseload)
  • The ability to confidently train/teach and assist in group teaching sessions
  • An animal care qualification and/or appropriate work experience
  • The ability to work to a high standard within a small dedicated team.
