The Fabrication Inspector is responsible for carrying out shop-floor inspections of steel fabrications and pipe fittings to ensure all products meet UTS Engineering's quality standards, approved drawings, specifications, and applicable industry codes. The role plays a critical part in ensuring product integrity, compliance, and on-time delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Inspection & Quality Control
Perform dimensional, visual, and workmanship inspections of steel fabrications and pipe fittings at various stages of manufacture
Verify materials, heat numbers, and traceability against mill certificates and job documentation
Ensure fabrication activities comply with approved drawings, WPS, ITPs, and quality plans
Inspect weld preparations, fit-up, welding, and post-weld conditions
Carry out final inspection and release of completed components
Welding & Fabrication Oversight
Confirm welding activities are performed in accordance with approved WPS and welder qualifications
Monitor fabrication processes including cutting, forming, machining, and assembly
Identify non-conformances and raise NCRs where required, supporting corrective actions
Documentation & Reporting
Complete inspection records, check sheets, and quality documentation accurately and on time
Support compilation of manufacturing record books (MRBs) / quality packs
Liaise with quality, production, and engineering teams to resolve inspection issues
Client & Third-Party Interface
Support client, third-party, or certification body inspections when required
Communicate inspection status and quality issues clearly to internal teams
Health, Safety & Housekeeping
Ensure all inspection activities comply with UTS Engineering health, safety, and environmental procedures
Promote safe working practices on the shop floor at all times
Standards & Compliance
Ensure compliance with applicable standards and specifications, including but not limited to:
BS / EN standards
ASME (where applicable)
Project-specific specifications and ITPs
Skills & Competencies
Essential
Strong understanding of steel fabrication and pipe fitting manufacturing processes
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
Good knowledge of welding processes (MMA, MIG, TIG, FCAW)
Competent in visual and dimensional inspection techniques
High attention to detail with a methodical approach
Desirable
Experience inspecting pressure-related components or pipeline products
Knowledge of NDT methods (VT, MT, PT)
Familiarity with traceability, material certification, and quality packs
Desirable
CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector (or working toward)
NVQ / City & Guilds in Fabrication, Welding, or Engineering
Experience working within ISO 9001 quality systems
