About the role: Facilities & Maintenance Officer?




Activate Learning is seeking a Facilities & Maintenance Officer to join the team at Guildford College. This full-time, permanent position plays a vital role in keeping the campus safe, secure, clean, and fully operational to support teaching and learning.


As a Facilities & Maintenance Officer, you will act as a hands-on handypersoncarrying out a wide range of DIY and maintenance tasks across the campus. Duties include unlocking and securing buildings, general repairs, painting and decorating, setting up rooms for events, moving furniture, and providing practical support for day-to-day campus operations. You will also monitor site security, respond to helpdesk requests, maintain external areas, and oversee waste and recycling processes.

Key Responsibilities:



Day-to-day facilities maintenance and estates support Carrying out handyperson and DIY repairs, including minor fixes and improvements Conducting health & safety checks and ensuring compliance Grounds maintenance and weather-related clearance (e.g. snow and ice) Participating in an on-call rota (one week in every four) Occasional overtime and weekend work as required Providing support across other campuses when needed

This is a varied, practical role, ideal for a reliable and proactive individual who enjoys hands-on DIY work and problem-solving in a facilities or handyperson environment.


This is a permanent, full-time role based at Guildford College.

The successful candidate will be a proactive, solutions-focused individual with a strong team ethic and a customer-focused approach to facilities support. You will be confident working independently as a handyperson, handling routine maintenance and DIY tasks while ensuring health and safety standards are met. A flexible, practical attitude and willingness to develop through training are essential.


Essential skills and experience include:

Practical experience in general maintenance, handyperson duties, and DIY tasks Knowledge of Health & Safety procedures and relevant legislation, including Safeguarding and the Equality Act 2010 Ability to assess, diagnose, and resolve minor maintenance issues independently before escalating to external contractors Basic IT skills, including the use of app-based reporting and helpdesk systems
