Factory Foreman/woman

Bristol, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced, practical Factory Foreman to take day-to-day charge of our fabrication and assembly workshop. The role involves leading a small production team, organising work on the shopfloor, maintaining quality, and keeping operations running smoothly. The position suits someone with a steady hand in steel fabrication environments, a good eye for understanding technical information, and the ability to guide a growing team as new processes--such as hydraulic power pack assembly--are introduced.

Key Responsibilities

Shopfloor Leadership & Daily Organisation

Supervise and coordinate the daily work of fabrication and assembly operatives. Translate the production plan into clear daily task lists and priorities. Ensure punctuality, readiness to work, and consistent shopfloor discipline. Maintain a tidy, orderly workshop and lead basic housekeeping routines.

Fabrication & Assembly Oversight

Oversee steel fabrication workflow, ensuring correct preparation, welding quality, and fitting. Support the introduction of in-house hydraulic power pack assembly, ensuring clean, organised work and correct build practices. Assist with developing simple, practical work instructions for repeated tasks.

Quality Control & Incoming Product Checks

Carry out first-line quality inspections on fabricated parts and assemblies. Check semi-fabricated items received from overseas suppliers and quarantine non-conforming items. Record defects and recurring issues and communicate them to management.

Materials, Consumables & Tool Control

Monitor shopfloor use of welding wire, gases, abrasives, fixings, and hydraulic components. Raise early warnings for shortages and ensure materials are used responsibly. Keep tooling, consumables, and workstations organised and ready for use.

Equipment & Process Reliability

Ensure machinery, welding sets, and workshop tools are used safely and correctly. Identify minor issues early and escalate machine faults promptly. Maintain accurate logs of output, downtime, and shopfloor issues.

Team Development & Support

Assist with onboarding and supporting new starters, addressing performance concerns early. Identify training needs and help develop skills across the team. Encourage a positive, cooperative working environment.

Coordination with Management

Liaise with senior management on scheduling, stock levels, and workflow constraints. Provide practical feedback on process improvements and shopfloor efficiency. Contribute to the refinement of production methods as the business grows.

Requirements

Proven experience in a supervisory role within a fabrication or production environment. Solid understanding of workshop operations, welding and fabrication processes, and safety standards. A good eye for understanding technical information such as basic drawings, specifications, and build details. Confident leadership style with clear communication and steady problem-solving ability. Ability to work under pressure, respond to changing priorities, and keep production moving. Basic IT literacy for recording work, downtime, and quality issues. Forklift licence or similar certification (desirable).
