About the Role:



As a Ferry Master you are responsible for the safety of the vessels, vehicles, passengers and fellow crew members at all times. You will be working across both Bodinnick and Polruan Ferries. At Bodinnick you will work on one of our two car ferries which are licensed to carry up to 100 passengers, and at Polruan either on one of our smaller vessels carrying up to 12 passengers and licensed by Fowey Harbour Commissioners or one of our larger MCA Licensed vessels carrying up to 48 passengers. To drive the ferries you will be required to achieve and retain both you Fowey Harbour Commissioners Boatman's Licence and your MCA Boatman's Licence. Training will be given to attain the licences, both on the job and through external providers.

The ferry service operates every day except New Year's Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day at Bodinnick and Christmas Day at Polruan. The shift pattern is based on a five day week and follows a rotating pattern that includes working weekends.

Responsibilities:



Meeting and greeting customers, taking fares and providing information about the ferry service.

Carrying out daily maintenance and cleaning tasks such as checking the ferry structure and equipment and maintaining the cleanliness of all areas of the ferry.

Recording checks and cleaning as required either on paper or electronically.

Ensuring the vessels and their safety equipment are always ready for service.

Fuelling the vessels and carrying out daily engine and fuel checks.

Radioing passenger numbers to the office and completion of all relevant documentation, both electronically and manually.

Ensuring the safety and welfare of school children and college students travelling on the ferry.

Driving the ferry on its scheduled route, including unmooring and mooring up.

Monitoring weather and tides to ensure that conditions are suitable for ferry operations.

Working with ferry managers to ensure good communication on all matters relating to the ferries at all times.

Liaising with the Harbour Commissioners, pilots and other marine services regarding shipping movements and river activity.

Reporting defects, faults and safety issues to the office as soon as possible.

To attend training, meetings and exercises both within and outside normal hours of work.

Assessing hazards and take the appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of the ferry and other vessels as well as that of yourself, passengers, crew and others at all time.

Reporting any incidents or near misses as well as concerns regarding health and safety to the office.

Following the procedures as set out in the Domestic Safety Management System.

Pay: From 14.00 per hour

Expected hours: 34 per week
