Job overview




The post holder will:


Lead on improving the standard of intrapartum risk assessment and fetal monitoring, as per element 4 of the Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle: effective fetal monitoring during labour

To contribute to the ongoing implementation of physiological Cardiotocography (CTG) interpretation. Support and work with the Inpatient Matron and Lead Midwife for Safety and Transformation, to ensure that fetal monitoring training and implementation of 'in action' learning is aimed at equipping midwives and doctors to improve their knowledge and competence in CTG interpretation and assessing fetal wellbeing.

The post holder is expected to work flexibly across all locations of the Trust.

Main duties of the job




The post holder will be required to:


To lead on improving the standard of intrapartum risk assessment and fetal monitoring, as per element 4 of the Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle: effective fetal monitoring during labour. Contribute to the ongoing development of a comprehensive training and competency testing package to give assurance that all staff responsible for fetal assessment and wellbeing are competent. Deliver the fetal monitoring training package to the MDT as required Support and work with the labour ward matrons, patient safety team and obstetric fetal monitoring and labour ward leads to ensure that fetal monitoring training and implementation of 'in action' learning is aimed at equipping midwives and doctors to improve their knowledge and competence in CTG interpretation and assessing fetal wellbeing Ensure staff are assessing fetal well-being in the context of the woman's health, pregnancy, gestation and stage of labour. Ensure staff can intelligently auscultate the fetal heart in labour in the midwifery led unit and at home and increase confidence in staff auscultating the fetal heart intermittently Develop midwives' competence and understanding of ST-Analysis Contribute to the ongoing development of a comprehensive training and competency testing package to give assurance that all staff responsible for fetal assessment and wellbeing are competent. Deliver the fetal monitoring training package to the MDT as required

Working for our organisation




We operate two busy general hospitals, Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital, and run services from other locations, including Sutton Hospital.



St Helier Hospital is home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, while Epsom Hospital is home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). Both Epsom and St Helier hospitals have Accident and Emergency departments (A&E) and Maternity services (Obstetrics).



Epsom and St Helier have around 3,800 births annually. Acute and planned maternity services are offered across to hospital sites (Epsom General Hospital and St Helier Hospital) as well as in the community setting. Both units have a birth centre adjacent to Labour Ward.
