Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Finance Manager to oversee all financial operations within our growing UK drainage services business.

This role is central to ensuring strong financial governance, accurate reporting and strategic insight that supports operational efficiency and long term growth. The ideal candidate will bring a blend of hands on accounting expertise, sector awareness and the confidence to partner with both field teams and senior leadership.

Responsibilities



Lead the preparation of monthly management accounts, financial statements, and performance reports. Maintain accurate financial records in line with UK accounting standards and company policies. Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management to support operational planning. Monitor job costing, project profitability, and margins across drainage and maintenance contracts. Ensure timely submission of VAT returns, payroll journals, and statutory filings.
Operational & Commercial Support:

Work closely with operations managers to analyse job performance, labour utilisation, and equipment costs. Provide financial insight on tenders, pricing models, and contract renewals. Support decision making on asset purchases, fleet management, and investment in plant and equipment. Review supplier contracts and negotiate improved terms where appropriate.
Compliance & Controls:

Ensure compliance with UK financial regulations, HMRC requirements, and internal audit standards. Strengthen financial controls, including purchasing processes, expense management, and stock control. Oversee payroll accuracy and liaise with HR on workforce related financial matters.
Leadership & Collaboration:

Manage and develop a small finance team, ensuring high standards of accuracy and service. Act as the key financial partner to the Managing Director and senior leadership team. Present financial insights and recommendations to support strategic planning and business growth.

Requirements



Fully qualified or part qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) or equivalent experience. Previous experience in construction, drainage, utilities, facilities management, or a similar operational environment is highly desirable. Strong understanding of job costing, operational finance, and service based revenue models. Excellent analytical skills with the ability to translate data into actionable insight. Proficient in accounting software (e.g., Sage, Xero) and advanced Excel skills. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both office and field based teams.
