The Opportunity



We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and strategic

Finance Manager

to take a leading role in managing our financial operations and supporting the continued success and growth of our organisation.

As Finance Manager, you will oversee all aspects of financial management, from day-to-day operations to strategic planning, whilst working collaboratively with our leadership team and subsidiaries across multiple locations. This role offers significant scope for influence, professional development, and the satisfaction of contributing to something truly worthwhile, the care and development of young children.

Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Leadership & Strategy

Lead the finance function and serve as a key adviser to the senior leadership team on all financial matters Develop and implement financial strategies that support the organisation's growth objectives and long-term sustainability Provide insightful financial analysis and recommendations to inform strategic decision-making Prepare business cases and financial models for new initiatives, expansion opportunities, and service developments Monitor market trends and sector developments that may impact our financial position Lead the development of financial policies, procedures, and controls to ensure best practice
Financial Management & Reporting

Prepare comprehensive monthly management accounts with clear variance analysis and commentary Oversee the preparation of annual budgets and rolling forecasts across all settings and head office functions Produce regular financial reports for the Directors, and external stakeholders Manage cash flow forecasting and treasury management to optimise working capital Coordinate the year-end accounts process and liaise with external auditors Ensure timely and accurate submission of all statutory accounts, returns, and compliance documentation Provide financial performance analysis at both organisational and individual level
Day-to-Day Financial Operations

Oversee accounts payable and receivable functions, ensuring accuracy and efficiency Manage payroll processes in collaboration with HR, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations Oversee banking arrangements, direct debits, and payment processing Monitor and manage parent fee collection and debt management procedures Ensure accurate recording and reconciliation of all financial transactions Manage relationships with banks, pension providers, and other financial institutions Oversee grant funding applications and management where applicable Maintain fixed asset registers and manage capital expenditure processes
Compliance, Risk & Internal Controls

Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards, regulations, and statutory requirements Maintain robust internal financial controls and safeguarding of assets Conduct regular reviews of financial processes to identify and mitigate risks Coordinate internal and external audits, responding to queries and implementing recommendation Stay informed of changes to legislation affecting childcare providers and ensure organisational compliance Develop and maintain business continuity plans for financial operations
Business Partnering & Stakeholder Engagement

Act as a trusted finance business partner to Subsidiaries and department heads Provide financial guidance and support to non-finance managers on budgets, forecasts, and financial performance Build strong relationships with external stakeholders including auditors, banks, advisers, and regulatory bodies Line manage and mentor the finance team, promoting a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement Delegate effectively whilst maintaining oversight and quality standards Foster a positive, supportive team environment that encourages learning and innovation Lead by example, demonstrating the values and professional standards expected across the organisation
About You

Professional Experience & Knowledge

Essential:



Significant experience in a finance management role, with demonstrable progression of responsibility Proven track record of managing financial operations in an organisational setting Strong technical accounting knowledge and understanding of financial management principles Experience of preparing management accounts, budgets, and financial forecasts Solid understanding of financial controls, compliance requirements, and audit processes Experience working with computerised accounting systems and financial software Practical knowledge of payroll, VAT, taxation, and statutory reporting

Highly Desirable:



Professional accounting qualification (ACCA, CIMA, ACA, or equivalent) Experience in the childcare, education, or not-for-profit sector Knowledge of multi-site operations and understanding the financial dynamics of service-based organisations Experience of managing external audits and working with regulatory bodies Understanding of funding streams relevant to childcare (such as government funding for early years education) Experience with childcare management information systems or sector-specific software

Beneficial:



Experience of organisational growth, mergers, or acquisitions Understanding of procurement processes and contract management Experience of implementing new finance systems or leading digital transformation projects
Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills:



Advanced Excel skills including financial modelling, data analysis, and automation Proficiency in accounting software packages (experience with systems such as Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, or similar) Strong numeracy and analytical capabilities with meticulous attention to detail Ability to interpret complex financial data and identify trends, risks, and opportunities Competence in producing clear, professional reports and presentations Understanding of data protection and information security principles

Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team Experience of managing workload across multiple priorities and meeting tight deadlines Strong organisational and project management skills Ability to delegate effectively whilst maintaining quality and oversight Coaching and mentoring capabilities to build financial capability across the organisation

Communication & Relationship Building:



Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to explain complex financial concepts in clear, accessible language to non-financial audiences Confident presenter with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence Collaborative approach with the ability to build effective working relationships Diplomatic and tactful when managing sensitive or challenging conversations
