Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.
We are looking for Fire Engineers to join our UK team. This role is vital to help deliver our growing portfolio of exciting projects and to assist in the development of our diverse, innovative, multi-cultural and self-motivated team of fire safety consultants. Watch this short clip to discover how Arup are shaping a better world and how you could be a part of it!
The Opportunity
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective - in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.
You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning - to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
You will complement our fire safety team and help deliver fire safety engineering services for our clients. As part of a 400+ strong fire safety skills network across 20 offices, your role will involve interactive and collaborative working with fire safety colleagues and multidisciplinary teams at Arup.
Projects
Our projects are diverse and range from conceptual fire strategy development through to handing over landmark projects. We undertake fire safety research to develop evidence-based solutions for novel fire safety hazards and strive to find ways to improve safety equity for the most vulnerable. We do this for our clients, and in partnership with academia and industry - striving to enable a sustainable, resilient built environment, using the latest knowledge and expertise, assisted by our own in-house digital tools and software.
You'll be working with the team who have delivered prestigious projects such as
WorkStack
, the RIBA London Award-winning building, now a contender for a RIBA National Award. It is the UK's first light industrial structure made from mass timber, where innovative fire safety engineering merges with sustainable design to set a new benchmark for urban industrial spaces.
Is this role right for you?
You'll either be working towards Chartered Engineer status or have a real motivation to achieve this. If it's the latter, we will support you with what you need to succeed here.
As a Fire Engineer you would be expected:
To understand and implement the principle of fire science on real projects via the engineering process (goals, objectives, building appraisal and hazards, design fire scenarios etc).
To understand the Total Fire Safety concept: from client brief, through design and construction; taking account of the socio-technical context, seeking to pre-empt fire safety issues common at different stages of a project, so that the end result delivers on the client brief.
To investigate and apply appropriate legislation and design guidance for use on your projects.
To develop and implement fire strategies in collaboration with the design team and relevant stakeholders. You'll either be working towards Chartered Engineer status or have a real motivation to achieve this. If it's the latter, we will support you with what you need to succeed here.
We're looking for:
Qualification in a relevant subject (fire engineering, other types of engineering, or architecture related).
Experience in a fire engineering consultancy or similar environment (industry related).
Knowledge of applicable legislation and guidance used in the UK, and awareness of the new regulatory regime.
Excellent report writing and communication skills - be collaborative, be creative and engaging.
Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, working to tight deadlines and juggling multiple demands and deliverables.
Proactivity in resolving issues, creating solutions, relying on others as required for assistance and experience.
