The Role



Being an apprentice with us means jumping straight into the deep end of commercial security. You'll be hands-on from day one - learning how to design, install, test, and maintain fire alarms, CCTV, access control, intruder, and emergency systems alongside our experienced engineers. As a small firm made up of exceptional individuals, we'll support you every step of the way, helping you take pride in your work, grow in confidence, and build the skills you need to become a fully qualified Systems Technician with a clear path to senior engineering roles.



Skills and Knowledge

Understanding of electrical and electronic principles. Core systems knowledge: fire detection, CCTV, access control, and intruder alarms. Practical installation techniques and safe working practices. Problem-solving skills to diagnose and repair faults. Customer service and communication skills. Responsibilities Support senior engineers in the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of: o Fire detection and alarm systems o CCTV and video surveillance systems o Intruder and hold-up alarms o Access control and entry systems o Emergency lighting and life safety systems Learn to carry out system testing, programming, verification, and fault finding. Assist with preventative and corrective maintenance across new and existing systems. Provide professional customer service, ensuring you represent Securewais with respect and reliability. Always follow health & safety practices, keeping sites safe, tidy, and compliant. Complete training blocks and reviews as part of your apprenticeship journey.

Structured mentoring from experienced Securewais Engineers. Funded training and industry certifications (including ECS card, IOSH, inspection & testing, and specialist security/fire system training). 10 block training weeks delivered by Skills for Security, blending classroom learning with real-world application. Regular performance reviews every 12 weeks, with clear goals and personalised development plans. Gradual increase in responsibility -- from shadowing installations to taking ownership of planned jobs and client interactions.

Progression to Systems Technician role upon completion, with a pathway to Senior Engineer, Project Management, or Technical Leadership roles.By the end of the apprenticeship, you'll not only hold a Level 3 Fire, Emergency & Security Systems qualification but also be eligible for Engineering Technician (EngTech) registration with the Engineering Council.

Entry requirements

Honest, dependable, and responsible. Positive, can-do attitude with openness to learning Communicates clearly and respectfully with others. Communicates clearly and respectfully with others. GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English. If not already achieved, apprentices must complete Level 2 prior to the end of the programme (with support provided). ECS card required (this will be arranged). Full UK driving licence is desirable.

Training to be provided



Initially, the apprentice will work alongside experienced engineers, learning and developing in the fields of both fire and security.



The qualification you would be studying towards is the Fire Emergency Security Systems Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard.



Skills for Security will deliver the apprenticeship training in block release at their Watford Centre. You will attend centre one week every eight weeks.



You will be required to complete all training tasks allocated during your block release weeks at the training centre and gather any site evidence needed to supplement your studies.

This is a 36 month apprenticeship, full commitment is needed during this time.
