Job Description

This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.


Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.


Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities


From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference.


It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.


In this role you will assist with maintaining the efficient running of the Firearms Registration Office. To provide expert input in answer to queries from Registration and Enquiry Officers, Police colleagues, other Forces, certificate holders and members of the public. To act as liaison between Sussex Police and the Home Office in all matters pertaining to the running and maintenance for NFLMS and prepared and present management information when required. To act as 1st line supervisor to registration staff.


The key accountabilities of the role are:


To effectively supervise registration staff in order to ensure that the licensing of firearms and explosives is administered efficiently and in a timely manner whilst managing the risk inherent in the public ownership of firearms.


To quality assure the work of registration and admin officers


To act as a point of contact for Firearms or Explosive Enquiry Officers in order that questions and concerns can be resolved without further referrals.


To achieve best use of National Firearms Licensing Management System and associated Business objects and to abstract performance measures and analyse the results


Constantly review and evaluate working practices to ensure that staff are able to manage workloads and if any blockages are identified then to resolve them in an effective and timely manner.


To take responsibility for the vetting and issue of visitor permits, European Firearms passes and provide advice and guidance on these.


Conduct additional open-source checks when required to assist in review of suitability


To function as a Registration Officer providing resilience and flexibility to that registration function.


Identify training needs of the staff within FELU and maintain and co-ordinate training records and training opportunities to maintain department competence.


To interrogate systems to provide performance reports for scrutiny.


To undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and character of work as may be reasonably required, including specific duties of similar or lesser graded post.


Skills & Experience

Educated to A level or equivalent experience or have suitable work and management experience. Ability to assess threat/harm/risks. Good working knowledge of Firearms and Explosive legislation. Working under pressure and tight deadlines Ability to negotiate and influence senior personnel. Ability to manage a workforce that is located at various locations. Evidence of developing and managing staff Ability to analyse and interpret data Ability to write reports. To be flexible with working hours to ensure resilience within the team and meet the requirements of the role, colleagues and the public Full UK Driving Licence.
