Assistant Manager
General Manager (in the Assistant Manager's absence)
Job Purpose
The Fitness Manager will line manage, motivate, and develop the fitness team to create a
member-focused, enthusiastic, and high-performing department
. You will ensure consistently high standards across all gym and leisure areas, deliver excellent customer care, and support the commercial performance of the club through strong team leadership and close collaboration with Reception.
This is a
hands-on leadership role
, requiring flexibility, strong people skills, and a passion for fitness, service excellence, and safety.
Key Responsibilities Leadership & People Management
Line manage, motivate, and develop the fitness team
Conduct regular
1:1 meetings
, job chats, and annual appraisals
Ensure all appraisal standards and performance expectations are achieved
Manage staff rotas, clocking in/out, absences, and time management systems
Ensure all sports and fitness shifts are fully covered within club opening hours
Recruit, induct, and train new fitness staff, ensuring full competency following their one-month review
Maintain confidentiality of all staff and business information
Fitness Operations & Member Experience
Monitor fitness team performance and ensure duties are completed to required standards
Actively encourage member interaction to support
member retention
Deliver high-quality fitness classes and cover classes when required
Coordinate and continually develop the sports & fitness programme, including classes and fitness-related events
Carry out gym inductions, fitness assessments, facility tours, and programme design when required
Promote the Y Club's reputation as
Manchester's friendliest health club
by being personable and approachable
Sales & Reception Support
Work closely with the
Reception Manager and Reception team
to support sales and lead generation
Assist with reception duties when required
Train fitness staff in appropriate sales techniques and processes
Promote Y Club memberships through effective communication and selling skills
Support prospective members by confidently showcasing club facilities
Health, Safety, Safeguarding & Compliance
Ensure the highest standards of health, safety, and security for all members, staff, and property
Comply with all legislative, health & safety, and operational requirements
Implement and follow the
YMCA Manchester Safeguarding Policy
Report safeguarding concerns in line with policy and procedures
Ensure all equipment is safe to use, reporting maintenance issues and liaising with external contractors
Liaise with the Maintenance Manager and General Manager to ensure compliance with legislation
Facilities, Cleanliness & Operations
Ensure high standards of hygiene and cleanliness across all leisure areas
Carry out and supervise regular cleaning checks
Support the management and development of physical resources to reduce repair and replacement costs
Assist in the day-to-day operational running of the club, including acting as
Duty Manager and Lifeguard
when required
General Duties
Liaise with the Assistant Manager and all departments within the Y Club
Carry out any other duties required by the General Manager or Assistant Manager
Support all operational aspects of the club in line with business needs
Lifeguard Qualification (Essential - Training Provided)
A
lifeguard qualification is required for this role
Full lifeguard training will be provided and funded by Y Club
for successful candidates who do not already hold the qualification
Shift Pattern
Full-time position
Flexible shifts including early mornings, evenings, and weekends
Minimum Requirements
Level 3 Personal Training qualification (essential)
Ability to teach group fitness classes
Experience managing or supervising a fitness team
Willingness to complete lifeguard training (if not already qualified)
Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills
Confident supporting sales and member engagement
Passion for delivering outstanding customer service
