Role and Responsibilities Provide Accurate Diagnosis of Issues with Heavy Duty and Light Duty Vehicles:
Lead the diagnostic process for both heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles to accurately identify mechanical, electrical, or operational issues.

Provide Accurate Updates on Completion of Works to Line Manager:
Regularly update the line manager on the status of ongoing repairs, providing clear reports on tasks completed, ongoing work, and any challenges faced.
Ensure that the line manager is kept informed about any delays or deviations from the initial schedule, with clear explanations and solutions.
Completion of Works to All Fleet Vehicles in a Timely Manner:
Oversee and ensure the completion of all repairs and maintenance for the fleet vehicles within agreed-upon timeframes.
Prioritise jobs based on urgency with operations and Line manager, ensuring that critical repairs are done first without compromising quality or safety.
Provide Parts Requirements to the Company Buyer with Description of Parts and Numbers (If Available):
Identify the parts required for vehicle repairs and communicate detailed descriptions and part numbers to the company buyer.
Ensure that parts are ordered in a timely manner to avoid delays in repairs, minimizing downtime for fleet vehicles.
Managing Stock Within the Workshop:
Maintain an organised and efficient inventory system for workshop tools, parts, and supplies.
Regularly audit stock to ensure availability of essential items and prevent shortages or overstocking.
Order parts and supplies as necessary with Company Buyer to ensure the smooth operation of the workshop.
Managing COSHH Storage:
Oversee the safe and compliant storage of hazardous substances used in the workshop, ensuring proper labelling and documentation.
Ensure that COSHH regulations are followed, and that safety measures are in place for handling and storing hazardous materials.
Workshop Cleanliness:
Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in the workshop to create a safe and efficient working environment.
Regularly inspect the workshop for cleanliness, ensuring tools, equipment, and work areas are well-organised and free from hazards.
Securing the Workshop and Restricting Access to Unauthorized Personnel:
Ensure that the workshop is secure at all times, preventing access by unauthorized personnel.
Monitor who enters and exits the workshop, ensuring only authorised staff or visitors are permitted entry.
Health and Safety Lead Within the Workshop:
Take responsibility for the health and safety of all workshop personnel, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations.
Lead by example in promoting a culture of safety, conducting regular safety briefings, and addressing any potential hazards.
Managing Bookings of MOTs for All Vehicles Within the Fleet:
Oversee the scheduling and booking of MOT tests for all fleet vehicles to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
Keep track of when each vehicle's MOT is due, and coordinate with external providers as needed to ensure timely tests are completed.
Providing Assistance and Guidance to Teams Facing Issues with Vehicles, Plant, or Equipment (Over the Phone After Lines of Operations Have Been Followed):
Offer support to other teams facing vehicle, plant, or equipment issues, ensuring that proper diagnostic steps have been followed before offering guidance.
Provide troubleshooting assistance and advice to ensure that operational efficiency is maintained across the company.
Managing and Completing PMIs (Preventative Maintenance Inspections) for Heavy Goods Vehicles and Light Duty Vehicles:
Oversee and ensure that Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMIs) are completed for both heavy goods vehicles and light-duty vehicles according to manufacturer guidelines and company requirements.
Schedule and assign PMI tasks, ensuring that each vehicle is thoroughly inspected for any issues that could affect its performance, safety, or longevity.
Track and document the completion of PMIs, making recommendations for repairs or service needs based on inspection results.
Ensure that any defects identified during PMIs are promptly addressed to prevent downtime and costly repairs.
Tracking of Workshop Times on Each Vehicle Within the Fleet:
o Monitor and track the amount of time spent on each vehicle in the workshop, ensuring that jobs are completed within expected timeframes.
o Use of system in which is in place for logging repair and maintenance hours for each vehicle to help with performance analysis and cost management.
o Provide the line manager with accurate reports of time spent on each vehicle for efficiency analysis and resource planning.
o Ensure that vehicle downtime is minimised, and the fleet operates as efficiently as possible by optimising workshop time allocation.
As the Senior Mechanic, the individual is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the workshop, which includes overseeing the diagnosis, repair, and Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMIs) for fleet vehicles (heavy-duty and light-duty), along with tracking workshop time for each vehicle. The role also involves managing stock, COSHH storage, cleanliness, and security within the workshop. Additionally, the role plays a key role handling MOT bookings, and providing technical support to teams addressing vehicle or equipment issues.
This role requires a combination of technical expertise, management skills, and effective communication to ensure the efficient, safe, and compliant operation of the workshop.
Qualifications
Extensive experience as a HGV Fitter/Mechanic
Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
Proficiency in using various hand and power tools
Knowledge of mechanical systems, engines, and machinery
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics
Relevant certifications in automotive or mechanical repair
Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
