Applications are invited for a fixed term (12 months) teaching focused post in Physical Geography at Lecturer level in the Department of Geography, Royal Holloway University of London.

The successful applicant will join a department with an outstanding reputation for its teaching and student support, with some of the very strongest ratings for student satisfaction (NSS) in the UK. They will be dynamic and enthusiastic with the ability to inform and inspire students, and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. The Department has a strong community ethos, and mentoring and further training will be available to the successful candidate. In 2018 the Department was awarded the Athena SWAN Silver Award from the Equality Challenge Unit, recognising exceptional commitment and excellence in the advancement of gender equality.

Applicants should demonstrate appropriate expertise in Physical Geography related to the potential teaching areas of the post, with a particular ability to contribute to teaching first year undergraduate statistics and on a second year \xe2\x80\x98Biogeography\xe2\x80\x99 module. Further potential teaching areas include a third-year undergraduate option course on one of the following: \xe2\x80\x98Global Warming\xe2\x80\x99, \xe2\x80\x98Global Conservation Challenges\xe2\x80\x99 or \xe2\x80\x98Mammals in a Changing World\xe2\x80\x99, as well as first-year undergraduate tutorials in Physical Geography; an undergraduate residential field trip; and postgraduate core course teaching on the MSc in Quaternary Science.

While this is a teaching-focused post, with no formal research requirement, the successful candidate will be encouraged to engage with the wider research culture of the Department, particularly the Centre for Quaternary Research (CQR). The CQR is one of the most significant clusters of expertise in Quaternary Science in the UK, and has played a leading role in shaping understanding of past climates and environments.

The successful applicant will join one of the UK\xe2\x80\x99s strongest Geography Departments, situated with the School of Life Science and the Environment, with research specialisms in not only Quaternary Science but also cultural and historical geography, geopolitics and security, development and environmental justice. High scores in the National Student Survey (93% overall satisfaction in 2021) are combined with research excellence, with the Department ranked 5th in the UK in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. The Department has excellent laboratory facilities including dedicated facilities for luminescence dating, palaeoecology, thin section work, tephrochronology and microscopy, as well as digital facilities for GIS and other forms of analysis and visualisation.
