Job Description

The new appointee will join the middle grade team and Consultant General Surgeons and will have the opportunity to work across the Surgical Specialties. A job plan will be agreed in discussion with the post holder and the Clinical Director in the first instance and approved by the Medical Director on behalf of the Chief Executive. The plan will be reviewed annually and will provide an opportunity for a discussion of the post-holders personal development plan and adjusted accordingly.
The candidate will be required in the first instance to rotate through the upper GI, colorectal and breast specialties in conjunction with Specialist Registrars working within the department. We are looking for a person who is highly motivated and capable to assist in the management of general surgical conditions within the Trust. If you have particular expertise in certain procedures or wish to acquire further skills that are of benefit to the trust, then this will be actively discussed and supported within the strategic and financial constraints that currently exist.

Main duties of the job
Job Responsibilities:

• The new appointee will be expected to have a broad understanding, knowledge and experience of general surgery, laparoscopic surgery, breast surgery and endoscopy.
• The new appointee will be expected to be familiar with and competent in the investigation and treatment of patients with gastrointestinal disease including endoscopy.
• On call commitment with prospective cover for general surgical emergencies. Intermediate cover within the department is provided by Specialty Registrars/Trust Grade doctors.
• The rota's average working hours over the 12 weeks is 46 1/2 .
• The roster will include 1 in 6 weekend working, night shifts, clinics, allocation to support theatres as well as Surgical SDEC.
• Elective general surgery dependent on the experience of the successful candidate and case mix.
• Responsible for colorectal rapid access outpatient clinics.
• To work with colleagues to audit activity and undertake research to ensure uniformly high standard of care.
• To participate in the teaching of undergraduates and other professional groups and to provide clinical supervision and training of junior hospital doctors.
• To participate in continuing professional development activities and in the Trust's appraisal and assessment processes, which include a formal annual appraisal.
• To participate in revalidation as required by the General Medical Council

The Trust delivers services to patients seven days a week and aims to provide equality of treatment and outcome regardless of the day of the week. To meet these aims and changing service requirements, the Trust may need you either to work temporarily outside of your core hours or to permanently change your core working days and hours. The Trust will give you reasonable notice, where possible, of temporary changes to your days or hours of work and will consult with you and/or your staff representatives about substantial permanent changes, but ultimately, these are changes which may be required of you.
There are currently eight colorectal surgeons (Mr Alberts, Mr Keeling, Mr Athisayaraj, Mr Sebastian, Mr Lord, Mr Ward, Mr Rahbour, Miss Olugbemi) and four upper GI surgeons (Mr ORiordan, Mr Vickery, Miss Wells and Mr Patel) who staff the Department of GI surgery. Miss Wignarajah, Mr Coveney, Mr Arnaout and Mr Kumar provide breast, endocrine and oncoplastic services.
All Surgeons currently undertake laparoscopic surgery as part of their specialist interests. We have fully equipped GI theatres with Stortz 4K stacks and both Harmonic scalpel and Ligasure are available. The range of laparoscopic operations undertaken in the unit include anti-reflux surgery, splenectomy, gastro-jejunostomy, bile duct exploration, colonic and rectal resection for both benign and malignant disease. We have an established TAMIS (Trans Anal Minimally Invasive Surgery) service for both benign and malignant rectal lesions.
