Freelance Creole Medical Interpreter

Job Description

We are seeking a highly professional and fluent Creole Interpreter to provide accurate, confidential, and culturally sensitive interpreting services, primarily for medical assignments within the North West of the UK, with a focus on the Greater Manchester area. This is a freelance/contractor role, requiring flexibility to travel for assignments.

Key Responsibilities



Interpretation:

Provide consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation services between English and Creole for patients, medical staff, and healthcare professionals.

Medical Settings:

Interpret in various healthcare environments, including but not limited to, NHS hospitals, GP practices, clinics, mental health appointments, and home visits.

Terminology:

Maintain a strong, current understanding of medical terminology in both languages to ensure accurate and complete communication of diagnoses, treatment plans, consent forms, and patient history.

Confidentiality & Ethics:

Adhere strictly to the Interpreter's Code of Professional Conduct, especially regarding confidentiality.

Travel & Flexibility:

Be willing to travel across the Greater Manchester area and potentially the wider North West region for face-to-face assignments. Must maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate appointment times, which may vary.

Remote Interpretation:

Be prepared to handle telephone and video interpreting assignments using relevant IT systems (e.g., MS Teams, Accurx, etc.) as required.

Essential Requirements



Fluency:

Native or near-native fluency in Creole and an excellent command of the

English

language, both verbally and receptively.

UK Location:

Must be currently residing in the UK, preferably near the Manchester area, and have the legal right to work as a self-employed professional in the UK.

Professional Qualification:

Possession of a relevant UK interpreting qualification is essential for public service interpreting, such as: Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) (Health option is highly beneficial). Certificate in Community Interpreting (Level 3 or above). Vetting Must possess or be willing to undergo an Enhanced DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service), as required for working with vulnerable adults and children in health settings.

Desirable Attributes (A Plus Point)



Experience:

Proven, previous experience as a professional interpreter, especially within the medical or NHS sector.

Cultural Knowledge:

Deep understanding of the cultural nuances and customs of the Creole-speaking community to facilitate communication and mutual understanding between parties.

IT Skills:

Competence in using virtual meeting platforms and basic computer systems for remote assignments and scheduling.

Pay: 15.00-20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 2 per week
