The Freight Business Development Manager will be responsible for
driving new business growth
across freight forwarding, bonded warehousing, and excise-related logistics services. The role focuses on identifying new customers, developing long-term commercial relationships, and increasing revenue within HMRC-regulated environments, including bonded and duty-suspended movements.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development & Sales
Identify, target, and secure
new freight opportunities
Develop opportunities across:
Import & export freight (road, sea, air where applicable)
Bonded warehousing
Excise movements (alcohol and other duty-suspended goods)
Build and manage a
strong sales pipeline
from lead generation to contract close
Prepare and negotiate commercial proposals, pricing, and service agreements
Meet or exceed agreed revenue and margin targets
Customer Relationship Management
Act as the commercial point of contact for new and key customers
Develop long-term partnerships through regular engagement and reviews
Work closely with operations to ensure customer expectations are met
Identify upsell and cross-sell opportunities within existing accounts
Market & Commercial Insight
Monitor market trends in freight, bonded warehousing, and excise logistics
Identify competitor activity and emerging opportunities
Provide commercial input into service development and pricing strategies
Internal Collaboration & Compliance
Work closely with:
Operations
Customs & excise compliance teams
Finance and senior management
Ensure all sales activity aligns with:
HMRC regulations
Excise warehouse approvals
Internal compliance procedures
Support onboarding of new customers, ensuring compliance requirements are met from day one
Key Skills & ExperienceEssential
Proven experience in
freight forwarding or logistics business development
Strong understanding of:
Freight operations (road, sea, air)
UK import/export processes
Track record of winning new business and managing commercial relationships
Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills
Ability to work independently and manage a sales pipeline
Desirable
Experience with
bonded warehousing
and/or
excise-controlled goods
Knowledge of HMRC customs and excise environments
Existing network within freight, drinks, or FMCG sectors
Experience selling value-added logistics services
