Full Stack Prototyper

Ellesmere Port, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Job Specification - Full-Stack Prototyper

Job Summary

We are seeking a Full-Stack Prototyper to rapidly develop functional proofs of concept that validate AI-driven opportunities within the UK home-buying and mortgage market.

This role sits at the technical centre of the Innovation Unit, working at high speed to turn hypotheses into tangible demonstrations that inform strategic decisions.

You will work across front-end, back-end, AI integrations, and lightweight data handling. Your work will help determine whether we build, buy, or stop ideas early, enabling the organisation to focus investment on concepts with genuine value and feasibility.

Unlike a traditional software engineer, this role focuses on speed, experimentation, exploration of emerging AI tools, and clear communication of technical learnings. You will turn ambiguity into working prototypes that test desirability, feasibility, and viability.

Key Responsibilities

1) Rapid Prototyping & Experiment Execution

a) Build quick, functional prototypes that validate or invalidate hypotheses.

b) Integrate AI/ML services, APIs, and external tools to demonstrate capability and value.

c) Create lightweight user interfaces that allow stakeholders to interact with early concepts.

d) Iterate prototypes rapidly based on stakeholder feedback or experiment results.

2) Full-Stack Engineering Across the Experiment Pipeline

a) Develop simple front-end interfaces using modern frameworks (React, Vue, etc.).

b) Build lightweight back-end services or serverless functions to support prototype logic.

c) Handle small-scale data ingestion or transformation needed for PoC functionality.

d) Ensure prototypes are technically sound enough to inform future engineering directions.

3) Technical Feasibility, Tool Exploration & Option Shaping

a) Explore emerging AI tools, frameworks, platforms, and APIs to assess applicability.

b) Provide technical input into buy vs build decisions for each opportunity.

c) Define the minimum technical path required to test each hypothesis.

d) Evaluate whether a prototype can scale--or whether it should remain a one-off experiment.

4) Collaboration with Product, Design & Innovation Teams

a) Work closely with the Product Strategist to understand problem framing and hypotheses.

b) Participate in innovation sprints and workshops to shape early concepts.

c) Work with Designers and Service Designers to ensure PoCs reflect user journeys.

d) Help SMEs and stakeholders understand the technical implications of each PoC.

5) Documentation, Handover & Knowledge Transfer

a) Document prototype architecture, limitations, and assumptions.

b) Produce technical handover packs for engineering teams when opportunities move to scale.

c) Capture learnings about tools, performance, constraints, and feasibility.

d) Share knowledge across the Innovation Unit to accelerate future experimentation.

Key Skills and Qualifications

Strong full-stack engineering capability (front-end + back-end + basic data handling). Comfort with modern frameworks (React, Vue, Next.js, Node.js, Python, FastAPI, etc.). Experience integrating AI tools, APIs, LLMs, vector search, or document intelligence. Ability to work at pace and make pragmatic technical decisions. Creative problem solving and willingness to experiment with emerging technologies. Ability to communicate technical findings clearly to non-technical audiences. Strong collaboration skills with multidisciplinary teams. Comfort working with ambiguity, incomplete data, and evolving requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

4+ years as a Full-Stack Developer, Prototyper, or equivalent hands-on engineering role. Demonstrated experience building prototypes, experiments, or PoCs at pace. Exposure to AI/ML services, LLM integrations, or automation platforms desirable. Experience in regulated industries (BFSI, PropTech, legal tech) advantageous but not essential. Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or similar field preferred but not required.
