Job Purpose
To provide high-quality, ethical, and person-centred counselling support to individuals experiencing emotional distress, mental health difficulties, or life challenges. The counsellor will contribute to the Jac Lewis Foundation's mission of promoting wellbeing, preventing suicide, and supporting positive mental health across the community.
Key Duties and Responsibilities1. Direct Client Work
Provide one-to-one counselling sessions in line with BACP ethical standards.
Work with clients experiencing a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, bereavement, relationship difficulties, and suicidal ideation.
Undertake assessments and develop appropriate therapeutic plans tailored to individual client needs.
Maintain appropriate and timely client records in accordance with confidentiality and data protection guidelines.
Liaise with other JLF staff and partner agencies to ensure holistic and coordinated support for clients.
2. Professional Practice
Work within the BACP Ethical Framework and the policies and procedures of the Jac Lewis Foundation.
Participate in regular clinical supervision, reflective practice, and professional development.
Keep up to date with developments in counselling theory, research, and best practice.
Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and supportive environment for clients and staff.
3. Community Engagement
Support outreach and awareness activities promoting mental health and wellbeing within the community.
Deliver workshops, group sessions, or talks when required to schools, workplaces, and local organisations.
Represent the Jac Lewis Foundation at relevant meetings, community events, and professional networks.
4. Administration and Reporting
Maintain accurate and confidential case notes and statistics in line with service requirements.
Contribute to service monitoring, evaluation, and reporting as directed by the Counselling Services Manager.
Support the ongoing development and improvement of the counselling service.
Person SpecificationEssential Criteria
Recognised counselling qualification.
BACP (or equivalent professional body) membership or working towards accreditation.
Experience working with adults in a counselling or mental health setting.
Strong understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, and ethical practice.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Flexibility to work some evenings or weekends if required.
Desirable Criteria
Experience working within a community or charitable organisation.
Experience supporting clients with suicidal ideation or trauma.
Group facilitation skills.
Knowledge of local mental health services and referral pathways.
Full UK driving licence and access to transport for community-based work.
