An inclusive and supportive primary school in Watford is seeking experienced and resilient SEN Teaching Assistants to join their specialist base unit from September. This is a full-time role, ideal for candidates passionate about working with children with complex needs in a nurturing, structured environment.
The Setting
You will be based primarily in a specialist
Year 3 base provision
that supports two children with significant needs:
One pupil with
Global Developmental Delay
, requiring close learning support and assistance with physical or personal care.
One pupil with
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
, who can exhibit
challenging behaviour
and requires a calm, consistent approach.
The day will be a mix of 1:1 and small group work in the base unit, with occasional integration into the mainstream classroom alongside support staff.
Key Responsibilities
Provide tailored support to meet individual Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs)
Assist with personal care and intimate care routines as required
Support emotional regulation and behaviour using consistent, positive strategies
Implement structured sessions including visual timetables, Makaton, and sensory or communication interventions
Facilitate activities such as
Bucket Time
, sensory breaks, and other therapeutic programmes
Work collaboratively with SENCOs, therapists, and class teachers
Ideal Candidate
Experienced in supporting children with
ASD
,
GDD
, and complex additional needs
Familiarity with strategies such as
Makaton
,
PECS
,
TEACCH
,
Bucket Time
, or other communication and regulation techniques
Skilled in de-escalation and supporting behaviour with sensitivity and calmness
Confident in managing physical and emotional demands
Able to work as part of a team in a dynamic, sometimes high-pressure environment
