The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality, engaging lessons in both subjects to students aged 11-16, many of whom may have special educational needs, social, emotional, or mental health (SEMH) challenges, or be working below age-related expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
Plan and deliver differentiated lessons in Maths and English across KS3 and KS4, tailored to meet the individual needs of learners.
Use creative and flexible teaching methods to engage students and help them overcome barriers to learning.
Assess, record, and report on student progress, using formative and summative approaches.
Prepare students for functional skills or alternative qualifications, where appropriate.
Set clear, achievable learning objectives and support students in working towards personal and academic goals.
Pastoral and Behaviour Support
Build positive, trusting relationships with students, promoting a safe and respectful classroom environment.
Manage classroom behaviour in line with the school's behaviour policy and therapeutic approach.
Support students with SEMH needs through consistent routines, structure, and emotional support.
Collaboration & Professional Practice
Work closely with the SENCO, Teaching Assistants, and wider staff team to provide holistic support.
Attend and contribute to staff meetings, CPD sessions, and parent/carer meetings as required.
Maintain accurate records, contribute to Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), and support with EHCP reviews where relevant.
Essential Criteria
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), QTLS, or relevant teaching qualification.
Experience teaching Maths and/or English to KS3 and KS4 learners.
Strong classroom and behaviour management skills.
Ability to adapt teaching for students with SEN and/or SEMH.
A nurturing, resilient, and flexible approach.
Desirable Criteria
Experience working in an alternative provision or specialist setting.
Knowledge of Functional Skills, Entry Level, or other alternative qualifications.
Training in trauma-informed or therapeutic approaches (e.g., Team Teach, Thrive, or similar).
A passion for engaging hard-to-reach learners and making a lasting impact.
