For many people, becoming a Funeral Service Operative is their first route into the industry before they become fully fledged Funeral Directors. They could be considered the unsung heroes of the funeral industry, with a supporting role that is essential. From assisting with funeral arrangements and making sure everything goes smoothly on the day, a job well done by a Funeral Service Operative will contribute to a smooth funeral. They'll provide compassionate support to the bereaved family as well as assisting with tasks including driving, preparation, and administration. They will also have an in-depth knowledge of funeral customs across a variety of faiths and denominations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Much of the work undertaken by you as Funeral Service Operative will take place behind the scenes and before the funeral service. The work you do in the background is vitally important to the smooth running of the funeral service. From preparing the deceased to performing viewings in the chapel of rest, the role of the Funeral Service Operative is hands on. These include:
To arrive in advance of the main funeral party to a funeral service ensuring seats are reserved, routes are clear, attendance cards and orders of service are distributed, requested music is in order, etc.
To take a turn on the 'on-call' rota, to respond to first calls when family, friends or authorities request the removal of their loved one from the place of death, hospital, or family home.
Making coffins, fitting coffin accessories, gowns and more
Preparing and fitting coffins, including engraving nameplates.
Receiving coffins and other deliveries
Preparing the deceased for a burial or cremation, including placing them in coffins and preparing them for viewings
Performing viewings in the chapel of rest
Maintaining, washing, cleaning, polishing, and driving vehicles
Liaising with the Funeral Directors to ensure records are kept up to date.
Requirements
An awareness of and sensitivity towards clients at a difficult time (the death and loss of a loved-one / friend)
Possess a current valid Driving Licence enabling you to drive legally in the UK High standards of personal hygiene and personal presentation.
A high level of fitness and capability to undertake and assist with physical aspects of the job.
An excellent command of the English language
A desire to work in the funeral industry.
