Experienced Gas/Heating Engineer (Self-Employed Subcontractor) - St. Albans

We're looking for a professional who already knows how to do this job well.

This isn't a training opportunity. We need someone who can walk into a customer's home, assess what's needed, explain it clearly, and deliver quality work efficiently. You'll understand the balance between doing the job properly and working within commercial realities - not gold-plating every task, but never cutting corners on safety or quality.

The engineer who'll succeed with us:

Has

genuine, demonstrable experience

in domestic gas/heating (not just qualifications on paper)

Turns up on time, every time, without excuses

Communicates proactively - with customers, with the office, about delays, parts, or issues

Takes personal pride in workmanship - particularly neat, professional boiler installations

Understands what customers actually need, not just what they think they want

Can work independently and make sound decisions without constant supervision

Treats every customer's home with respect and leaves it clean

What we won't accept:

Last-minute call-offs or poor timekeeping

Sloppy work or untidy installations

Poor communication or going silent when problems arise

Over-promising to customers or creating unrealistic expectations

Engineers who need constant hand-holding

The work:

Varied domestic plumbing and heating work - routine maintenance, servicing, repairs, and installations including full central heating systems. You'll have a full diary of pre-arranged appointments with office support for scheduling and customer liaison.

Monday-Friday 08:00-17:00

with out-of-hours emergency cover approximately one weekend in five to six (rota basis).

Reliability in covering your committed shifts is non-negotiable.

Essential requirements:

Gas Safe registered

with current certification

Minimum 5 years' experience

in domestic gas/heating installations and repairs

Demonstrable track record of reliable employment/subcontracting

Full UK driving licence, own van, own tools

CIS registration or UTR number (or willingness to obtain immediately)

References from previous employers/clients

This is a genuine self-employed subcontractor position.

You are responsible for your own tax, National Insurance, insurance, and business expenses. We're looking for established professionals who understand and want this arrangement - not those seeking employment.

This is a self-employed position. The applicant must be time served with a CIS certificate/UTR number or be willing to obtain one. He/she must be Gas Safe registered and must also have a full driving license, own tools and own vehicle. Duties will be to carry out general gas central heating maintenance, servicing, repair and installation and general plumbing maintenance. Overtime may be available. Self-employed persons are responsible for paying their own National Insurance contributions and tax. In addition, they may lose entitlement to benefits. If in any doubt we would recommend that expert advice is sought before taking up self-employment.

Average Salary Range 260.00 - 320.00 per day depending on experience.
