Purpose
The Principal Examiner ensures that the standards of an externally assessed unit, module, or component are maintained and consistent with the unit specification and assessment criteria. The Principal Examiner also oversees the standardisation of Examiners.

Have personal IT equipment capable of running Pearson software, with appropriate security and internet connectivity. Communicate with Pearson and centres in a timely manner. Raise concerns if you suspect malpractice, maladministration, or safeguarding issues.


Role-Specific Services and Expectations
In addition to the above, you must:Ensure timely delivery of contracted units or components. Update the mark scheme/guidance before the pre-standardisation meeting. Lead meetings such as pre-standardisation and standardisation; participate in appeals and reviews. Select and mark items for validity as agreed. Mark live candidates' responses as part of quality assurance when required. Prepare and collate materials for standardisation. Support supervisors and Examiners. Sample and backread marking to ensure accuracy. Monitor the progress of supervisors and Examiners. Review responses for clarification. Act as a senior escalation point in quality assurance. Provide support across all paper versions. Report to the Assessment team after marking and submit feedback forms. Support awarding activities by writing reports, recommending grade boundaries, and participating in awarding discussions. Complete the Senior Assessment Associate review process and attend follow-up meetings. Submit reports on candidate performance. Provide support and written responses to complaints when required.


Skills and Competencies

Required:Experience and knowledge of quality assurance and assessment practice. History of moderation and/or marking a regulated qualification. Excellent communication skills. Proven ability to coordinate and deliver training such as standardisation. Comprehensive knowledge of the specification for your subject area. Examples of leading or supporting key quality assurance activities.


Desirable:High level of IT proficiency. Leadership experience in delivering qualifications. Knowledge of regulatory compliance and requirements. Experience in report writing within a regulated industry.


Experience and Qualifications
Qualifications required depend on the qualification being delivered. Contact Pearson for clarification if unsure.

General Qualifications (e.g. GCSE/A Level):Degree. UK-recognised teaching qualification with QTS.
