About the Role
We are looking for a committed and patient
GCSE English and Maths Tutor
to support young people in our Alternative Provision. Our learners often have
SEND and SEMH needs
, and may have had disrupted education. Your role will be to help them re-engage, rebuild confidence, close learning gaps, and support them towards a meaningful GCSE outcome.
Teaching will take place
either one-to-one or in very small groups of up to four students
. This is a highly rewarding role where you can genuinely make a difference to the lives, aspirations, and futures of young people who need it most.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver high-quality tutoring in
GCSE English and/or Maths
in line with exam board requirements.
Plan and deliver engaging sessions that meet the needs of students with
SEND and SEMH profiles
.
Work one-to-one or with small groups (maximum 4 students).
Assess learning levels, track progress, and identify gaps in knowledge.
Build positive relationships with young people who may present challenging behaviours.
Support learners to develop confidence, resilience, and a belief in their ability to achieve.
Contribute to a nurturing, safe and structured learning environment.
Work collaboratively with the leadership team and other tutors.
Promote high aspirations and encourage students towards further education, training, or employment.
Person Specification Essential:
Strong subject knowledge in
GCSE English and/or Maths
.
Experience working with young people, ideally in an
alternative provision, SEND, PRU, SEMH, or youth work setting
.
High levels of patience, empathy, and resilience.
Ability to differentiate and adjust teaching strategies to individual needs.
Confidence managing small groups and building rapport with disengaged learners.
Passion for helping young people overcome barriers and achieve success.
Desirable:
QTS
, PGCE, or teaching qualification (not essential but beneficial).
Experience supporting students to pass GCSE English or Maths.
Knowledge of trauma-informed practice or restorative approaches.
Experience writing or following tailored learning plans (EHCPs).
Hours and Pay
Tuesday: 9am-3:30pm
Wednesday: 9am-3:30pm
Friday: 9am-1pm
(paid at half-day rate)
