General Instructor with specialism in English
to join our dedicated team. The successful candidate will support the delivery of high?quality teaching and learning across the school, with a particular emphasis on English literacy, communication, and curriculum development. This role plays a vital part in helping students achieve positive educational outcomes, develop confidence, and foster a love for language.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning Support
Deliver engaging English-focused lessons, interventions, and small?group sessions under the guidance of qualified teaching staff.
Support the planning and adaptation of English curriculum materials to meet the diverse needs of learners.
Provide structured learning activities across a range of subjects as required.
Assist students in developing core literacy skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension.
Student Support
Build positive, trusted relationships with students to support both academic progress and personal development.
Implement behaviour-support strategies consistent with the school's values and policies.
Monitor, record, and report on student progress, offering targeted support where needed.
Encourage independence, resilience, and positive engagement in all learning activities.
Classroom & School Duties
Contribute to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and nurturing classroom environment.
Assist with classroom organisation, resources, and displays.
Supervise students during non?teaching times (e.g., transitions, break times, educational visits).
Collaborate effectively with teachers, support staff, and external professionals.
Professional Conduct
Uphold the values, policies, and safeguarding standards of Walnut Tree School.
Participate in staff training, meetings, and ongoing professional development activities.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Person SpecificationEssential
Strong subject knowledge in English language and literature.
Experience working with young people in an educational, youth work, or support setting.
Ability to deliver structured learning activities with clarity and confidence.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Patience, empathy, and a commitment to student wellbeing.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable
Experience supporting students with additional needs (e.g., SEN, SEMH).
Understanding of literacy intervention strategies.
Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 3 Teaching Assistant, HLTA, or equivalent).
Experience working in a school or alternative provision environment.
