Newent Doctors Practice has an exciting opportunity for a practice nurse to join our semi-rural expanding practice in Newent. Newent is a small market town central for a Gloucester, Ross, Malvern, Ledbury, or Tewkesbury commute.
We are looking for an experienced practice nurse but are also willing to train the right nurse for a long-term role. The successful candidate will join our nursing team and will be working alongside our nurse lead, practice nurses, healthcare assistants and phlebotomists to provide a range of nursing services to our patients.
We are offering a position of 28 hours per week across four days, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday with a choice of either working 9:30am-5:30pm or 10:00am to 18:00pm.
Salary is negotiable depending on qualifications and experience.
Please note you will be expected to support our enhanced access clinics and work a late shift every fourth Thursday evening as part of your contractual hours and approximately 3 Saturday mornings a year for which you will be paid overtime.

Main Responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the practice nurse. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
a. To support or lead the Infection Prevention Control (IPC) and to work to the IPC Policy providing and or supporting the implementation of audits, training, support and evidence of compliance to the practice manager.
b. To support or lead the production of the IPC annual statement in conjunction with the practice manager.
c. To develop, implement and embed an effective care management programme for the frail and housebound patients registered at the practice
d. To assess the needs of patients ensuring the provision of healthcare is appropriate, incorporating evidence-based practice
e. To develop, implement and embed health promotion and wellbeing programmes
f. To implement and evaluate individual treatment plans for chronic disease patients that promote health and wellbeing
g. To identify, manage and support patients at risk of developing long-term conditions, preventing adverse effects to patients' health
h. As required, to provide routine nursing care to patients in accordance with clinical based evidence, NICE and the NSF
i. As required, to diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions
j. To prescribe medication for patients in accordance with PGDs and own scope of practice
k. To review patient medications to enhance compliance
l. To provide guidance to patients in the use of prescribed and over-the-counter medications regarding side effects and dosages
m. To co-ordinate the provision of travel medicine services
n. To request pathology services and process pathology results as required
o. Where necessary, undertake the collection, storage and despatch of pathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs, smears etc. and ensure the cleanliness of any equipment so used. Perform any investigatory procedures requested by the GPs.
p. To oversee the provision of chronic disease clinics, delivering patient care as necessary, referring patients to secondary/specialist care as required
q. To maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with extant legislation
r. To ensure read codes are used effectively by all members of the nursing team
s. To ensure the appropriate maintenance and use of chronic disease registers
t. To develop, implement, embed and participate in well woman clinics
u. To develop, implement, embed and participate in well man clinics
v. To ensure compliance with the practice chaperone policy
w. To assist GPs with minor surgery when required
x. To prioritise health issues and intervene appropriately
y. To support the team in dealing with clinical emergencies
z. To recognise, assess and refer patients presenting with mental health needs
aa. To implement vaccination programmes for adults and children
bb. To support patients in the use of their prescribed medicines or over-the-counter medicines (within own scope of practice)
cc. To liaise with external services/agencies to ensure the patient is supported appropriately (vulnerable patients etc)
dd. To delegate clinical responsibilities appropriately (ensuring safe practice and the task is within the scope of practice of the individual)
ee. To support the clinical team with all safeguarding matters, in accordance with local and national policies
ff. To understand practice and local policies for substance abuse and addictive behaviour, referring patients appropriately
gg. To deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
hh. In participation with the practice manager and nursing colleagues, ensure the maintenance of equipment and stock levels relating to patient care.
Qualifications
Registered Nurse (RN) qualification with valid registration.
Strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
Proven experience in patient care, preferably within a clinical setting.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and colleagues.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Strong organisational skills with attention to detail.
Commitment to ongoing professional development and training.
