Job Title: GRADUATE ASSISTANT TEACHER IN RESIDENCE

Hours of Work:

GRATs are expected to work on a flexible rota and rolling timetable equivalent to 41.5 hours per week during Sherborne Preparatory School term time (33 working weeks, to include INSET).

Salary:

19,623.28 (which equates to 12.25 per hour) for the fixed term period. Salary will be divided into 11 equal amounts and paid monthly in arrears on the last banking day of the month from January 2026 to December 2026 inclusive (excluding August 2026). Remuneration includes payment for 33 working weeks plus 5.6 weeks paid holiday entitlement.

GRATs are also provided with accommodation (see below), all meals during term time, access to the on-site gym and swimming pool, a range of other staff benefits, and opportunities for continuing professional development and training.

Accommodation:

For the better performance of the Graduate Assistant Teacher's duties, accommodation will be provided rent free by the School during the period of employment. Heating, lighting and local taxes are included but the Graduate Assistant Teachers will be personally responsible for any tax levied by HMRC in respect of accommodation or other benefits. Meals may be taken free of charge in the school dining-hall during term time (breakfast, lunch and dinner).

Holidays:

The postholder will be able to take all SPS holidays.Holiday cannot be taken during Sherborne Preparatory School term time. You may be required to work Bank Holidays that fall during term time.

Pension:

The post-holder will be able to join the Sherborne School Support Staff Pension Scheme on the first day of the month after completion of two months service. Where eligible the post-holder will be auto-enrolled into the Pension Scheme as per current legislation; further details may be obtained from the Head of Human Resources (Sherborne School Bursary).

Main Purpose:



We are seeking an energetic, engaging and vibrant Graduate Resident Assistant Teacher who would like to join Sherborne Prep for a year in our happy and exciting school community.

The Graduate Resident Assistant Teacher's role is a multi-faceted position and GRAT's are involved throughout all areas of the school, taking account, wherever possible, of the skills and interests of the particular individual. GRATs are a key part of the school and can assist with or lead lessons, sport, trips, the library, drama, music, pupil supervision, boarding and co-curricular activities.

As part of your role, we offer a memorable year working with lively and engaging pupils and staff within a flourishing co-educational Prep School environment.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities within the boarding house:



Support the house staff in creating a warm and friendly atmosphere and fostering a happy community spirit. To follow all house routines in an active manner and liaise closely with House staff over the day-to-day running of the House and the health, welfare and care of pupils. Be the lead adult on certain evenings and mornings in the boarding house- administering medication and supporting other members of the house team. To help and support pupils learn the routines of the school day and boarding house including laundry, making beds, packing and unpacking and bedtime routines. To aid the Boarding Master in the organisation and running of activities throughout the week and weekend. To be alert to the health and safety of all pupils, including an awareness of the procedures for accounting for all pupils in the Boarding House to which they are assigned; their summoning, and their evacuation if necessary. To encourage the pupils in community living and interpersonal skills such as team participation, responsibility for others, understanding, tolerance and compassion. To act as emergency cover in house including overnight cover (for example should the Boarding Master be taken ill or be required to accompany pupils to hospital). To accompany students to hospital if required.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities in school:



To be responsible for specific teaching duties in school, which may include assisting with classwork on a 1:1 or small group basis, administrative support, and cover for staff absence. To be a personal tutor and Skills lead for individual children. Working closely with teachers and Heads of Department to take an active role in developing the departmental activities and profile within the school. Assist the PE / Games staff in the weekly programme of sport (as appropriate). This may include coaching a group of children, running one of the School's sports teams and refereeing fixtures against other schools. Assisting the sports department, school administration team and Boarding Master in various administrative tasks. Assist in the running of co-curricular activities. Supervising students during break times. Working with pupils during prep (homework) sessions to ensure they are working on task and supporting their needs. To accompany pupils on out of school activities e.g., medical escorts, trips, sports fixtures and residential camps as required. To assist with major school events in the School Calendar e.g., open days, speech day, music events, sports, drama productions. To assist in the preparation of rooms/facilities for the start of term, and the clearing of them at the end of term.

Other Tasks and Responsibilities:



Attend staff meetings as required, CPD training and Inset at the start of each term. Promote good behavior and pass any concerns about the well-being of pupils to the Deputy Head (Pastoral). Uphold the rules of the school and pass on breaches of the rules to the relevant staff. Promote the general progress and wellbeing of all pupils under their supervision and care. Provide guidance and advice to pupils on educational and social matters or assist them in speaking to an appropriate member of staff about any such matters. Be sensitive to social relationships between children. Be responsible for the pastoral care of each child within any activity, lesson, session or in carrying out any of your duties around the School. Actively seek help or guidance from other experienced staff in case of any uncertainty. Be familiar with the relevant school policies.

Required Skills/Experience



A university degree. Enthusiastic about the education of young people and for the job itself. Able to use own initiative and act as a good role model. Sporting/coaching experience and enthusiasm. Caring and sensitive to the needs of all pupils. Cheerful and willing with a flexible and 'can do' approach. Able to carry out instructions reliably and efficiently. Excellent communication skills. Leadership skills and taking personal responsibility. Able to work individually and as part of a team. ICT literate. Able to give attention to detail. Experience of working with children and a driving licence are advantageous, but not essential.
