The ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK and is an accelerator facility producing neutrons and muons used for groundbreaking research in material and biological sciences. The Controls group is responsible for maintaining the control system for the accelerator to keep ISIS running 24/7.
The software applications controls team develops and maintains the software that allows our operators to monitor and control the ISIS ion-source, linear accelerator and synchrotron. When new equipment is installed or old equipment is replaced, we work with the equipment owners to make it controllable by the operators in the ISIS Main Control Room, including developing user interfaces and applications. We are also responsible for collecting data from across the accelerators and using it and other controls resources to implement sophisticated machine learning for anomaly detection and optimisation of operations among other uses.
Graduate Scheme
The STFC Graduate scheme will give you the opportunity to really pursue your interests and passion early in your journey with us, supported by technical training and a broader programme of career support and training and development.
Our dedicated Graduate Development Team will provide the right combination of challenge and support throughout, helping you achieve your ambitions. We know that professional recognition is also important to you too, so we will provide mentoring and expertise to help you achieve valued qualifications or chartered status in your chosen field.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
A recent migration to the open-source EPICS software for control of the accelerators at ISIS has provided more opportunities to interact with the machine using modern technologies and open-source tooling. With this in mind, an opportunity for a graduate to join the team has opened up!
Our current and future projects include using these tools and technologies to support everyday operations of the accelerator. Alongside developing operator-focused applications to improve how users interact with the control system, we are also looking to extend our use of machine learning to improve the efficiency of routine operations. Our graduate will emphasise development of new user interface tools, including related to the deployment and application of machine learning.
The successful candidate would be involved with:
Supporting the operation of the ISIS accelerator control system through fixes and improvements in existing applications as well as developing new features
Design and develop new applications, as well as replace legacy systems with modern designs, to improve user interaction with the control system
Find opportunities to integrate machine learning into existing applications, support this integration and develop new solutions where appropriate
Collaborate with other STFC departments and international accelerator facilities keep ISIS at the forefront of accelerator controls development and application of machine learning. This will involve attending both national and international conferences and undertaking placements at other facilities, either abroad or locally. A great networking opportunity!
