Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Graduate Design Engineer with a mechanical background to join our dynamic engineering team. This is an exciting opportunity to work for one of the UK's largest and most versatile specialist vehicle converters, supporting both commercial and military projects.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the design and development of specialist vehicle solutions, from concept through to production, using SolidWorks and other industry-standard tools. Due to the nature of our work, security vetting will be required for this position.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the design and development of bespoke vehicle systems, components, and assemblies for commercial and defence applications.
Produce 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
Support senior engineers with concept generation, prototyping, and testing of vehicle modifications and systems.
Prepare and maintain design documentation, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), specifications, and technical reports.
Collaborate with production, procurement, and quality teams to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective, and meet all regulatory and safety requirements.
Participate in design reviews, providing creative input and technical support to improve product performance and manufacturability.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on innovation, quality, and process efficiency.
Ensure compliance with defence standards, customer specifications, and internal quality systems.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
Bachelor's degree (BEng/BSc or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
Proficient in SolidWorks (or similar 3D CAD software).
Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail.
Good communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments.
Eligible for UK Security Clearance (SC) or higher.
Desirable:
Experience (industrial placement or project work) within automotive, defence, or specialist vehicle design.
Knowledge of fabrication, hydraulics, and electrical integration in vehicle systems.
Familiarity with DFMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly) principles.
Awareness of BS8888 drawing standards and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).
