Job Details



The role involves assisting in Roads and Transportation related projects whilst undertaking study towards and Honours degree at Dundee University.


You will be predominantly working within Structural Services team within Roads & Transportation Services based in Bankhead Central, Glenrothes.


You will assist in the planning, design, contract specification and implementation of projects undertaken by these teams. You will also undertake tasks related to the general management and maintenance of assets looked after by these teams e.g. Roads, Road Structures, Lighting, Harbours and Flood Prevention assets.


Although a high level of mental agility is evidently required, this work will also be physically demanding at times as it will require site work such as inspections and construction supervision. This may include working at height, in live traffic and in watercourses.


During your first 4 years in the role, you will also undertake completion of an SCQF Level 10 (Honours) Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee. In order to achieve this, you will be required to attend university 1 day per week for 44 weeks of the year, for which you will be given authorised absence. As much of the degree is based on workplace learning, you will be supported to achieve the required outcomes for the degree in the workplace. You will be provided with a workplace mentor to assist you.


Progression through the pay grades will be as follows, conditional on the successful completion of the university course assessments in each year.


Year 1 - FC4 Spinal Column Point 9 - 24,890.91 Year 2 - FC5 SCP13 - 27,087.17 Year 3 - FC6 SCP17 - 29,508.69 Year 4 - FC7 SCP22 - 32,437.03

On completion of the degree, i.e. Year 5, and subject to a satisfactory workplace review, the service will aim to find a permanent position for the candidate within the service at FC7 level.

The Person



You will have sufficient qualifications to gain entry to the degree level course, or be expected to gain these from exams currently being undertaken. For example, 4 Highers at Grade B or above (see role profile for further details)


You will have the ability to, and demonstrate full commitment to, managing the demands of full time employment and academic study.


You will have good communication and IT skills relevant to the role and be keen to develop these skills further.


You will have some understanding of the role of a Civil Engineer in the public sector and a desire to pursue a career in this field including progression to professional qualification.
