Our Edinburgh office is situated in the heart of the bustling city centre, with panoramic views of the castle, gardens and Princes Street below. The office is always alive with activity as it houses a 65-strong team consisting of mechanical, electrical, civil, structural and support teams. The office's open plan kitchen and staff break out area often plays host to our team's socialising time, whether it's over a morning coffee, lunch or after work unwind.


Purpose





You will be an ambitious and enthusiastic individual who is keen to build on your engineering knowledge and develop your analytical abilities as well as your design and drawing skills as part of the structural and civil engineering team.



The position requires good communication skills and to develop and maintain good relationships with your colleagues, technicians and external parties. You will be representing Harley Haddow through direct contact with clients and other design team members on the projects you will contribute to.



Your responsibilities will include input to the delivery of the Structural and Civil Engineering designs on assigned projects by assisting department staff by developing designs, calculations, preparation of drafting work and administerial tasks.



You will learn by assisting engineers on projects and will be mentored by Principal and Senior Engineers, but will take ownership for the designs and development of your work.



You will be encouraged to attend lectures, seminars and other relevant industry functions as well as training courses with prior approval of the Departmental Director in order to progress you're learning and career goals.




Roles and Responsibilities




A desire to gain experience and knowledge to develop your engineering and design skills Assist in developing Structural Engineering designs for projects through various project stages under instruction from experienced staff members Development and preparation of sketches, diagrams and drawings to communicate engineering concepts under the supervision of experienced engineers Apply concepts and analysis techniques for the preparation of calculations of simple elements within structures, load takedowns, under the guidance and supervision of experienced engineers Understand and apply principles of stability and develop these for proposed structures Demonstrate the ability to break down complex structures into individual components to allow for element design Attend internal and external reviews and meetings as required with clients and design team members Liaise with other disciplines for projects to assist with coordination of designs Contribute to structural engineering reports under the direction of experienced engineers Prepare designs which consider and reduce hazard and risk. This will include the preparation of assumed sequences of construction, contribution to risk registers, highlighting risks within tender information Conducting site visits during the construction phase of projects under the supervision of experienced engineers Adhere to company quality, environment and H&S accredited standards as required for your role Undertake general administrative duties as and when required Ensure QA procedures are followed and documented Ensure all of your work is reviewed and approved by a minimum of Senior Engineer prior to any documentation issue.

Qualifications




Degree qualified Batchelor/Masters in Civil or Structural Engineering Hold graduate membership ICE or IStructE



Minimum Requirements




Workplace experience through degree course - advantageous but not required Capable of working with own initiative to provide solutions to engineering and management challenges Right to work in the UK Hold a valid full UK Driving Licence (advantageous but not required) Be prepared to travel to meetings and projects as necessary. Generally local to contracted office, but occasional work in other parts of UK and Europe or overseas that may necessitate an overnight stay.
