Job Description

This post has been set up to support Investigators with grant applications and the design and development of protocols for new research studies that will be sponsored by Moorfields.
The post holder will be expected to ensure first class research support through, advise, help and offering solutions to expedite high quality research.
The post holder will be expected to fully participate in the continuous improvement work within research. Striving to add value and eliminate waste are key aspects of the role to ensure we have a first class research support service that optimises research revenue for patient benefit.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with investigators on the development of research projects for the submission to funding bodies, offering guidance and support to ensure the preparation of strong applications.
The post holder will also provide advice and will work closely with investigators on the development of protocols for submissions to regulatory bodies where those studies are to be sponsored by Moorfields or Moorfields is the legal representative.

Job responsibilities
Support funding applications to research programmes, from initial analysis of funding required through to writing grant applications.
Provide support to researchers and internally within the department on all matters relating to funding and grant applications.
Identify/establish suitable and appropriate funding stream(s) for proposed study (e.g. NIHR, MRC, Wellcome Trust, charities etc) and determine the requirements of the funder (application deadlines, eligibility for costs etc).
Undertake a thorough development and analysis of research protocol, some of which will be highly complex, identifying resource needed and assessing costs. This may be conducted in association with other relevant members of the department senior management team and/or external collaborators.
Provide advice on eligibility of specific costs, such as excess treatment costs or study support costs.
Assist investigators in the preparation of a study outline/protocol for submission to funding bodies, taking highly complex scientific language and translating into accessible terms for the funder and ensuring all costs are accurately described.
Ensure submissions are planned and managed effectively to take account of submission deadlines, particularly where input of different departments is necessary.
Provide guidance and support to researchers who need to make changes to their draft protocol where sufficient funding is unlikely to be available or has been refused. This may require negotiation and persuasion skills as well as an excellent understanding of a variety of sometimes highly complex options.
Provide any additional guidance to investigators on completion of AcoRD template for attribution of costs for health and social care research.
Maintain communication with researchers to monitor the success of funding applications.
Ensure all Moorfields R&D stakeholders are fully appraised of agreements and that work agreed to is planned effectively to ensure all project deadlines can be met.
Effective communication to ensure various departmental leads are aware of the importance of complex projects.
Be able to negotiate and motivates sites on project delivery, including linking in with other initiatives.
Communicate very sensitive information about performance and change and deliver complex formal presentations to large groups
Arrange for invoicing to be sent to investigators to cover agreed R&D support.
Facilitate EDI and PPIE components are integrated into grant applications.
Support and guide investigators regarding other issues such as research governance and the management of IP, liaising with Trust R&D department where appropriate.
Provide input on grant application outcomes that involve complex study design, analysis or interpretation and comparison of a range of options or studies.

  • Science degree or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience
  • Post-graduate qualification in a scientific or management discipline
