The Role
Reporting to the Estates Manager, the postholder will maintain all outdoor areas of the College site, ensuring external areas are fit for purpose, safe, clean, and pleasant for students, staff and visitors. Assisting with driving, general maintenance duties and other functions as part of a small team and as directed. The postholder manages the upkeep of the College's outdoor areas, including:
Maintenance
Maintaining safe, well-kept and litter-free college grounds and work areas.
Preparing and maintaining sports pitches to meet the requirements of the college games and fixtures programme.
Assisting with the development of existing or the creation of new, pitches, tracks, or other surfaces as required.
Maintaining trees and hedging, advising the Estates Manager when external specialist services may be required.
Working with various types of equipment, machinery and occasional chemicals, in strict accordance with health and safety and product guidelines.
Supporting the wider team with planned and reactive maintenance and responding in a timely way to recorded risk management activities and ad hoc maintenance requests.
Driving and cleaning college vans, minibuses and other vehicles.
Health and Safety
Co-ordinating and complying with health and safety standards and policies as they relate to grounds work and the use of maintenance equipment, chemicals and materials, including:
Comply with organisational safety, policies and procedures.
Ensure work specific Health and Safety requirements and responsibilities are always met. Identifying hazards and assessing and managing risks to own and others' safety.
Maintaining equipment and tools to minimise causes of failure including basic servicing of grounds machinery.
Notifying the Estates Manager of any damage, defects or Health & Safety across the site.
Applying such chemicals as needed under the direction of the Estates Manager and in line with relevant healthy and safety policies and good practice.
Understanding and ensuring the implementation of the College's emergency fire procedures.
General
Working with the Estates Manager and team members to fulfil planned and reactive tasks efficiently, within our resources and on time.
Working with the Estates Manager to create a safe working environment, strong team ethic and commitment to high standards.
Communicate clearly in a friendly, informed, and responsive way with the Estates Manager, fellow team members and wider College staff and students.
Assist with College events during and out of regular hours on an occasional basis as required by the Estates Manager.
To be flexible with normal working hours to meet the emerging demands of College life.
Assist as part of an out of hours on call emergency call out rota.
Demonstrating and implementing energy, environment, waste and sustainable practices.
Ensuring the security of the college is maintained.
Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of students.
Promote and ensure the good reputation of the College.
Carry out any other duties as requested by the Estates Manager, Director of Operations and other members of the Senior Leadership Team.
The Person
The successful candidate will:
Experienced in grounds work and site maintenance and able to operate a range of grounds equipment (e.g. mowers, tractors, hedge cutters).
Enthusiastic about working outdoors in all weathers and being efficient and safety conscious whilst working unsupervised.
Reliable, punctual and hardworking with a good approach to teamwork and problem solving.
Health and Safety knowledge for areas and activities of work and willingness to undertake further training as required.
Ability to meet and deal tactfully and courteously with colleagues and contractors.
Ability to understand complex written and oral instructions.
Ability to work in a planned and managed way.
Willingness to carry out general internal maintenance repairs to buildings, furniture, fittings and finishes, as required.
The ability to occasionally work at height (having attended a suitable course).
The ability to lift and transport moderately heavy objects (having attended a suitable course).
IT literacy with the ability to learn and use maintenance and Health and Safety mobile phone / PC applications.
Enhanced DBS (Child Workforce).
Full UK Driving Licence.
Experience of working in a school or public environment. (Desirable)
Working knowledge of arboriculture and/or developing and managing attractive grounds and/or natural sports pitches. (Desirable)
