About Us
RSPCA Buckinghamshire South Branch was formed in 1964 to support the work of the national RSPCA and the owners of domestic animals in South Buckinghamshire. While we operate within the framework of the national RSPCA, we are a separately registered charity with our own governance and fundraising responsibilities. Our branch covers a wide area across South Buckinghamshire, including Chesham, Burnham, High Wycombe and Princes Risborough.
Our work is driven by the passion of dedicated volunteers and staff, and sustained through fundraising and the income from our two charity shops in Chesham and Burnham. As we look to the future, we are seeking an inspiring leader to guide our growth and ensure we continue to deliver sustainable, compassionate care for animals in need.
Job Summary
The Head of Branch will provide operational and strategic leadership for the RSPCA Buckinghamshire South Branch. They will ensure the effective delivery of animal welfare services, maintain financial sustainability and strengthen community engagement.
The role oversees all branch activities, from animal care and retail operations to governance, fundraising, and volunteer management, while fostering a culture of compassion, professionalism and continuous improvement.
The Head of Branch reports to and works closely with the Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership and Governance
Deliver a branch strategy aligned with RSPCA national objectives and local community needs.
Support the Board of Trustees to ensure effective governance, compliance and financial oversight.
Monitor performance and provide clear, timely reports to the Trustees.
2. Operational Management
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the branch, including animal welfare services, adoption processes and veterinary partnerships.
Ensure high standards of care, safety and wellbeing for all animals in the branch's care.
Develop and maintain policies and procedures to ensure compliance with RSPCA guidelines and relevant legislation.
Manage the branch's charity shops, overseeing retail operations and identifying opportunities to expand revenue streams.
Explore new locations and business opportunities to strengthen the branch's retail presence and fundraising capacity.
3. Financial and Resource Management
Lead the annual budgeting process and ensure sustainable financial management.
Identify and secure diverse income streams including grants, donations, sponsorships and fundraising.
Ensure transparent, accurate and timely financial reporting.
4. People and Volunteer Leadership
Inspire, support, and develop staff and volunteers to achieve their full potential.
Build a culture of collaboration, inclusivity and accountability.
Oversee recruitment, training and HR processes in line with legislation and best practice.
5. Community Engagement and Advocacy
Act as the public face of the Branch, building relationships with stakeholders, partners and the local community.
Represent the Branch in the media, at events and within the wider RSPCA network.
Promote awareness of animal welfare issues and encourage community participation in campaigns and fundraising.
Person Specification
Essential Skills and Experience
Proven senior leadership experience in a charity, not-for-profit, or relevant organisation.
Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, fundraising and income generation.
Demonstrable success in managing staff and volunteers.
Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
Knowledge of animal welfare legislation and best practice, or the ability to acquire this quickly.
Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
Strategic thinker with the ability to deliver sustainable growth.
Experience in retail operations and income generation.
Based approximately one hour from Chesham or Burnham, as regular travel to our locations is required.
Desirable Skills and Experience
Experience working with a Board of Trustees and navigating governance structures.
Proven ability to generate income through charity retail operations.
Track record of securing grants and developing diverse fundraising initiatives.
Strong understanding of health & safety, risk management and compliance within a charity setting.
Previous experience in an RSPCA branch or other animal welfare organisation.
