We are seeking a Head of Cloud Engineering to lead the cloud strategy, architecture, and operations for a leading private mental healthcare organisation in the UK. This role will be responsible for driving cloud transformation, ensuring security and compliance, and optimising cloud services to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.


As the Head of Cloud Engineering, you will oversee the migration of on-premise infrastructure to the cloud, manage a team of cloud & infrastructure engineers, and collaborate with stakeholders across IT, cybersecurity, data, and clinical operations to deliver scalable, secure, and resilient cloud solutions.

Key Responsibilities




1. Cloud Strategy & Leadership

Define and execute the cloud strategy aligned with business and healthcare regulatory requirements. Lead the migration from on-premise to cloud (Azure), ensuring minimal disruption to services. Advocate for a cloud-first approach, driving innovation through cloud-native services and automation. Provide technical leadership and mentor a team of cloud & infrastructure engineers.
2. Cloud Architecture & Operations

Oversee the design, implementation, and management of highly available, scalable, and secure cloud infrastructure. Oversee cloud governance, cost optimization, and performance management. Work closely with DevOps, security, and data teams to ensure cloud solutions support AI, analytics, and digital health initiatives. Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, ARM, or CloudFormation.
3. Security, Compliance & Risk Management

Ensure all cloud environments comply with NHS Digital (DSPT), GDPR, Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001, and other healthcare regulations applicable. Implement Zero Trust security architecture and cloud security best practices. Work with cybersecurity teams to mitigate risks, ensure data privacy, and manage incidents. Define and maintain disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity plans (BCP)for cloud services.
4. Cloud Cost Management & Vendor Engagement

Optimise cloud costs through effective capacity planning and FinOps strategies. Manage relationships with cloud service providers (Azure) and third-party vendors. Negotiate contracts and SLAs to ensure cost-effective and reliable cloud services.

Key Skills & Experience




Essential:

Extensive experience in cloud engineering, architecture, and migration projects (preferably in healthcare or regulated industries). Strong expertise in Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud, including PaaS, IaaS, and serverless computing. Experience with cloud security frameworks (e.g., NIST, CIS, ISO 27001) and compliance in healthcare (DSPT, NHS Digital, GDPR). Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (IaC)(Terraform, ARM, or CloudFormation). Strong understanding of networking, identity management (Azure AD, IAM), and security best practices. Experience leading and mentoring a team of cloud engineers, architects, or DevOps professionals. Knowledge of cost optimization and FinOps principles in cloud environments.

Desirable:



Experience with containerization (Kubernetes, Docker) and CI/CD pipelines. Knowledge of AI, data analytics, and healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7). Previous experience in a healthcare setting (NHS or private sector). Cloud certifications (e.g., Azure Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Google Professional Cloud Architect).
