Role purpose and overview
This role is accountable for Comment publishing across digital platforms. You will set creative direction for publishing, work with the Comment Editor on content strategy, and execute that vision through smart production and promotion. Working in a fast newsroom, you will be capable of publishing numerous articles a day with accuracy and flair. You will report into the Head of Publishing.
The Head of Comment Publishing (HOCP) will collaborate with and challenge commissioners to ensure every article has a clear purpose, audience and platform. The HOCP will also have responsibility for quality and subbing of comment articles, allowing for copy to be published with confidence and transferred to Print without needing to be re-subbed. The Comment desk shares subbing resource with News and the HOCP should work closely with News publishers to ensure this is deployed appropriately.
The HOCP should think creatively about how to present the Telegraph's comment articles across digital platforms, making creative use of visual assets and promoting our writers, to maximise subscriber engagement and seek out new audiences.
Key responsibilities

  • Ensure Comment articles are produced to the highest standard and at optimal times across our digital platforms.
  • Responsible for the subbing and building of priority articles or the appropriate delegation of this responsibility, liaising with Chief Subs to manage workflow.
  • Collaborate with and challenge commissioners to ensure articles have a clear audience and purpose, presenting creative ideas on how to enhance our journalism for digital platforms.
  • Work with the Comment Editor to develop digital publishing plans that reach and engage audiences, as well as satisfying subscribers.
  • Liaise with desks across the newsroom to plan the digital content package around key stories and major events.
  • Analyse performance data to understand the Telegraph's audience and, using the data, learn from what publishing and promotion techniques work well and why, feeding back to commissioners.
  • Oversee digital publishers to ensure articles are presented creatively across all platforms with intelligent copy and compelling headlines, standfirsts, and visuals.
  • Work closely with visual editors where appropriate, paying attention to how graphics and other visual assets can enhance our comment journalism.
  • Work with promotion and community teams to ensure Comment articles and writers reach the right audiences, with the particular aim of boosting their presence off-platform.
  • Manage the Senior Comment Publisher, setting their priorities and supporting their development, and give direction to pool publishers.

  • Significant experience of sub-editing and publishing on digital platforms.
  • Quick, accurate writing of headlines.
  • Experience of managing a team in a busy newsroom.
  • Excellent news sense.
  • Clear understanding of the Telegraph's audience.
  • Broad awareness of Telegraph Comment content and the ability to generate ideas to identify and break into new audiences.
  • Understanding of data analytics and how it can be used to aid commissioning.
  • Ability to respond well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.
