Working hours:
Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (1-hour lunch break). Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Role Overview
The Head of Communications will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive communications strategy that supports institutional objectives and enhances the department's reputation across internal and external audiences.
The candidate will lead on all aspects of communications, including media relations, brand management, digital content, stakeholder engagement, and internal communications, working closely with senior leadership and liaising with University-wide communications teams as appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
External Communications
Act as brand guardian, ensuring consistency across all external messaging and materials
Provide strategic advice and editorial oversight for all public-facing content
Develop and deliver engaging campaigns and messaging across digital, print, and press channels
Manage media relations, including press enquiries and crisis communications
Digital Communications
Oversee the department's website and social media presence, ensuring content is current, engaging, and accessible
Lead the creation of multimedia content (video, imagery, copy) tailored to diverse audiences
Monitor online performance using analytics tools and recommend improvements
Events and Fundraising Communications
Support the promotion of events and fundraising initiatives through appropriate channels
Work closely with colleagues to ensure strategic priorities are effectively communicated and supported
Internal Communications
Develop effective internal communication processes to support staff and community engagement
Foster a cohesive internal identity and promote a culture of openness and collaboration
Essential Criteria
Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
Significant experience in a senior communications role
Proven ability to manage and deliver across a broad range of communications channels
Excellent writing, editing, and content development skills
Experience managing media relations, including crisis communications
Strategic thinker with strong planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Confident communicator with strong interpersonal and influencing abilities
Proficient in relevant digital platforms and tools, with a strong understanding of digital trends
Budget management experience and the ability to prioritise competing demands effectively
