JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking an experienced and driven education professional with deep expertise in Functional Skills to lead our curriculum development at a pivotal time for our specialist college.
As Head of Curriculum, Teaching and Quality, you will:
Lead the design and delivery of a brand-new Functional Skills programme, embedding BKSB diagnostics and ensuring it meets the needs of our learners with learning disabilities and autism.
Establish robust exam board compliance systems and assessment protocols, many of which are being introduced for the first time.
Act as Ofsted Nominee, preparing the team for their first full inspection.
Provide strategic leadership to ensure excellence across teaching, learning and quality.
Line manage a committed team of 6+ staff.
Ensure compliance with DfE, ESFA and Local Authority regulations and audits.
Report directly to the Co-CEO and present regularly to the Education Governing Body.
This is essential operational role that combines hands-on curriculum development with compliance oversight, professional development and high standards of delivery.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Functional Skills Leadership
Design, implement and deliver a new Functional Skills curriculum in English and Maths.
Embed BKSB assessments into teaching and tracking processes.
Establish robust systems for exam board compliance, registrations, internal quality assurance, and invigilation processes.
Directly teach Functional Skills where required and support staff development to embed best practice.
Teaching and Learning
Oversee high-quality curriculum delivery across all education programmes.
Monitor and track learner progress and ensure effective intervention where needed.
Promote inclusive, learner-centred teaching tailored to the needs of young people with learning disabilities and autism.
Ensuring candidate learning is innovative and relevant to the real world including the use of digital technology.
Quality and Compliance
Lead preparation for Ofsted and act as the nominated individual during inspection.
Ensure compliance with funding and quality bodies (e.g., DfE, ESFA, Local Authorities).
Maintain and update key education policies and ensure staff are trained on all compliance requirements.
Lead internal reviews and audits and respond to external quality assurance visits.
Team Leadership and Professional Development
Build the capability and confidence of the teaching team through ongoing coaching and performance management.
Create a culture of high expectations, collaboration and continuous improvement.
Governance and Reporting
Prepare and deliver reports for the Education Governing Body and key stakeholders.
Work cross-functionally with operational, HR and enterprise teams to ensure alignment and delivery of organisational goals.

EXPERIENCE
Essential
Proven track record of designing and delivering Functional Skills (English and Maths) in an FE or specialist setting.
Strong understanding of exam board requirements, assessment protocols, and compliance systems.
Experience of working with young people with learning disabilities and autism, and supporting them to achieve meaningful outcomes.
Understanding of EHCP processes and supporting learners with individualised goals.
Evidence of leading curriculum development, quality improvement, and teaching excellence.
Desirable
Ofsted or shadow nominee experience.
ILR data management and ESFA audit experience for high needs funding.
Autism expertise.
