Introduction



The College seeks to appoint an inspirational and innovative, Head of Department/Teacher of Design Technology and Product Design. The right person will have a marvellous opportunity to work in a stimulating environment, where resources, buildings, colleagues and pupils all strengthen the process of teaching and learning.

The position would suit an experienced teacher wanting to put their experience to use in a different context, and with the right skills and vision to inspire and motivate young people.

The College



Eastbourne College is a co-educational HMC independent school of just over 550 pupils, of whom half are full-time boarders. It is a strong community with excellent links with local schools and the remarkable town in which it is located.

The Post



The successful applicant will be expected to teach Design, Technology and Product Design across KS3 to KS5. They will be expected to share their passion for innovative and sustainable design by offering enrichment opportunities beyond the taught curriculum, including leading extracurricular activities, design competitions, and partnerships with industry and universities.

The Department



Our Design and Technology Centre has gained a national reputation for excellence in the fields of innovative design and manufacture.

The large, very well-equipped centre is situated across three floors. The first two floors contain two well-resourced workshops where pupils can replicate industrial practices using equipment such as a CNC router, two laser-cutters and a heat-treatment area as well as traditional hand and machine tools. On the top floor, there are three studios equipped with computers and interactive whiteboards and 3D printers. A wide selection of industry-specific software is available, with most 3D solid and surface modelling done using our preferred platform, Onshape.

The department has continued its success in a number of local, national and international competitions, including nominations for the Triumph Design Awards, RSA Pupil Design Awards, the Foundation for the History of Totalitarianism and the British International Education Association STEM Design Competition. In the latter, we were world runners-up.

Background



All members of Common Room (College teaching staff) are expected to play a full role in the academic, co-curricular and pastoral aspects of College life. To lead and develop a forward-thinking and outstanding Design, Technology and Product Design department that inspires creativity, critical thinking, innovation, technical, practical and academic excellence. The Head of Department will shape a curriculum which ensures and enables cutting edge design practices, sustainability, high-quality teaching and learning, and enrichment opportunities that prepare pupils for future study at top university courses and careers in design, engineering, innovation and technology.

Education and Training:

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a relevant degree.

Knowledge and Experience:



Proven track record of excellent teaching in DT and Product Design. Proven track record of excellent teaching at GCSE Design and Technology and A-Level Product Design. Experience of leading a team or curriculum area, or elements within it, perhaps as a 2ic; and certainly demonstrating / possessing the potential to lead an autonomous department. Strong knowledge of curriculum design, assessment, and pedagogy. Experience of delivering A-Level Product Design or equivalent. Experience with EPQ supervision or Oxbridge/UCAS support for design-related courses. Strong knowledge of design theory, materials, manufacturing processes, and digital design tools. Familiarity with health & safety regulations in a workshop environment. Experience with CAD/CAM, 3D printing, and digital design tools.

SAFEGUARDING DUTIES



The post holder's responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible, or with whom they come into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School's Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy Statement and staff code of conduct at all times. The post holder will be engaging in regulated activity. There are particular safeguarding issues requiring attention for this post. The responsibility for pupil discipline, occasional one-to-one settings or trips/transport, and variety of situations require staff in this post to have a deep and wide understanding of safeguarding procedures. They have a broad view of pupil behaviours and should exercise vigilance regarding child protection issues. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School they must report any concerns to the School's Designated Safeguarding Lead or, if they are the School's DSL, to the Headmaster and relevant agencies.
In making the appointment the Headmaster will have regard to the experience and potential specifically exhibited by candidates. The exact delineation of responsibilities will be determined by the strengths and interests of the appointee.

The College has its own salary scale and the successful applicant will be remunerated at a level representing their qualifications, skills and experience. Specifics of this can be discussed with the Headmaster at interview.
