Head of Design - Engineering / Industrial Solutions
As the Head of Design, you will provide strategic leadership and direction to a skilled design team focused on diverse tooling projects within the aerospace sector. This senior leadership position requires an experienced people manager capable of fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration, supporting professional growth, and driving cohesive team performance. You will play a key role in defining design delivery processes, promoting operational efficiency, and cultivating a positive, motivated, and high-achieving team culture
Key Responsibilities:
Manage and optimise resource allocation across the Design team
Ensure effective availability and utilisation of resources in alignment with both internal and client requirements
Allocate appropriate resources to projects to meet deadlines and quality standards
Oversee budget management related to resource planning
Ensure compliance with established processes while supporting continuous improvement initiatives
Serve as a representative of the Service to customers and suppliers
Conduct regular progress reviews and performance assessments with team members
Participate actively in contract reviews, feasibility studies, offer evaluations, project close-outs, and continuous improvement efforts across processes, services, projects, and customer standards
Lead complex technical studies and project diagnostics, defining innovative, cost-effective solutions that align with client specifications and industry standards.
Oversee and coordinate multidisciplinary design activities, acting as the technical authority while embedding robust methodologies to drive project outcomes.
Mentor and develop the design team, ensuring alignment with company values, project milestones, and long-term strategic growth within the business.
Ensure quality, cost, and schedule objectives are met, supervising the output of design engineers and external consultants across all stages.
Champion technical compliance and deliverable integrity, approving studies, reports, and ensuring outputs meet stakeholder expectations.
Manage project design risk and contract oversight,
Assist with technical submissions, and influencing schedules and commercial terms.
Requirements:
Degree level qualification or significant relevant industry experience - minimum of 5 years
Experience of managing a team at a senior level.
You must have a proven ability to critically analyse existing solutions.
Be adaptable to different projects and industry sectors.
Working knowledge of CAD design packages i.e. Catia V5
Contract experience sufficient to understand customer requirements, work scope and performance
Aerospace experience would be beneficial but not required
Tooling experience would be beneficial but not required
Skills:
Excellent interpersonal and client facing communication skills
Strong analytical, reporting and presentation skills
Collaborative team player with strong teamwork skills
Detail orientated and meticulous
