Radius has grown rapidly at a time when tax requirements have become more complex and reporting more onerous (BEPS; CBCR; Pillar 2 etc). The Group has direct tax responsibilities for over 80 legal entities across the UK, Europe, Asia and US.
The Tax function is part way through a multi-year transformation not only to catch up with past growth and legislative developments but to build the technical capability and processes to support the group as it continues to grow and expand at pace. The role of Head of Direct Tax is really important to us and will be play a crucial part in this transformation.
The Director of Tax is supported by a Head of Compliance; Head of Direct Tax and Head of Indirect Tax and their respective teams. The Compliance team are responsible for preparing UK VAT returns and the collation and review of financial information for the preparation of corporate tax and transfer pricing returns either by outsource providers or in-house in the case of the UK. They also assist with factual enquiries as part of tax audits and the processing of tax payments. The Indirect Tax team provide technical support to the Compliance Team and the wider business, are responsible for the VAT strategy to manage risk and achieve efficiencies.
Currently the processes for the tax forecasting; calculation of the consolidated tax charge; CBCR; Corporate Interest Restriction and Pillar 2 are very siloed and reliant on multiple excel spreadsheets. A key priority and objective for the incoming Head of Direct Tax is to review; make recommendations and oversee implementation of a more integrated and strengthened approach potentially using technology where beneficial.
This is a multi-faceted role not only encompassing tax reporting but technical advice on transactions; transfer pricing; business partnering and team leadership.
Your responsibilities day to day will be...
Legally minimise tax liabilities through informed application of tax laws and regulations;
Identify and mitigate tax risks, improve processes by developing or implementing best practices and robust controls for tax returns & reporting, tax compliance and tax payments;
Ownership of the group tax charge and forecasting of direct tax payments;
Manage the preparation; review and submission of corporate tax returns (UK prepared in-house, all others outsourced);
Manage transfer pricing documentation (local files are currently outsourced) and support the Director of Tax on Operational TP matters including the calculation of TP adjustments and inter-company agreements;
Lead and develop the Direct Tax Advisory team and provide technical support and training to the Compliance Team;
Build relationships and interact with key stakeholders to provide tax planning and consulting expertise;
Provide internal tax advice on potential acquisitions, group structure rationalization, and other strategic projects;
Integration of new acquisitions into business-as-usual tax processes;
Provide internal tax advisory services and support on day-to-day business operation matters to the Group and withholding tax obligations;
Support the Director of Tax on optimising the in-house vs outsourced mix of taxation activities and use of technology;
Manage external tax advisors and outsourcing providers.
Qualifications
ACA or equivalent accountancy qualification
Structured tax training in Top 6 accountancy firm or major law firm.
Proven in-house experience in a multi-national group;
Ability to identify, prioritise and manage resolution of risks and issues
Strong technical skills, knowledge of tax accounting, tax compliance and all types of tax returns
Commercially aware and able to balance tax risks and costs against wider group objectives
Effective written and verbal communication
Experience of managing a small team;
Proficient interaction and influencing capabilities across all levels of the organisation, including dealing with non-technical people
Planning and co-ordination skills, with experience of leading and successfully delivering tax related projects.
Attention to detail but remains strategically focussed on the "big-picture"
Results focussed, able to consistently deliver to a high standard.
